Matthew "Matt" Benning (born May 25, 1994 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League since August 2016 , playing there on the position of defender .

Career

Benning first spent his junior years between 2010 and 2012 with the Spruce Grove Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League , with whom he won the Rogers Wireless Cup in his rookie season . After his sophomore year there, he was selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round at 175th position by the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League . The defender then moved to the United States Hockey League for the Dubuque Fighting Saints for the 2012/13 season . Here, too, Benning and the team succeeded in winning the league championship in the form of the Clark Cup .

In the summer of 2013, the defender moved to Northeastern University , where he decided to continue his career in the US college sports system. Alternatively, there was the option of an engagement with the Kootenay Ice from the Western Hockey League . Benning played alongside his studies for three years for the university's ice hockey team in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . At the end of the 2015/16 season - at the end of his college days - he also won the championship here.

With the Boston Bruins not hiring the defender for the next four years after the Entry Draft, Benning was able to test the open market as a free agent . Ultimately, in August 2016, he accepted an offer from the Edmonton Oilers in his hometown. He made his debut for the NHL franchise in early November after spending the previous month on the Bakersfield Condors farm team in the American Hockey League . As a result, Benning established himself in the Oilers' NHL squad and has been there regularly since then.
