United States Hockey League

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The United States Hockey League ( USHL for short ) is the most important junior ice hockey league in the USA . The league consisted of eleven teams until 2006. Before the 2006/07 season, the league was increased to twelve teams. Only players aged 20 and under are allowed to play in the league. The teams are based in the west and central United States. The USHL is a total amateur league and players are not paid by the teams. This allows former USHL players to play in the NCAA , which only accepts athletes who didn't make any money in the sport before going to college.

The league started in 1973 and was first a semi-professional league, in 1979 it became a purely amateur league. Many USHL players later play in college and in the professional field. The NHL teams had 38 former USHL players in their ranks in the 2003/04 season.

On May 3, 2006, Columbus was awarded a new USHL franchise that started the 2006/07 season with one team. Based on the NHL team Columbus Blue Jackets , the team was named Ohio Junior Blue Jackets .
