James Elmer Benning (born April 29, 1963 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League from 1981 to 1990 . Since May 2014 he has been General Manager of Canucks. His brother Brian also played in the NHL.
Career
Jim Benning began his career as a hockey player with the Portland Winter Hawks , for whom he played in the Western Hockey League from 1979 to 1981 . He was then selected in the first round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft as the sixth player of the Toronto Maple Leafs , for which he was active for the next 5½ years in the National Hockey League . The 1986-87 season began Benning in the NHL team the Maple Leafs, then played for the onetime farm team from the American Hockey League , the Newmarket Saints , and finally December 2, 1986 along with Dan Hodgson in exchange for Rick Lanz to the Vancouver Canucks delivered.
In the summer of 1990, the defender left the Canucks and joined the Milwaukee Admirals from the International Hockey League . He finally ended his active career in the 1991/92 season when HC Varese of the Italian Serie A .
Following his career as a player, Benning first worked as an amateur scout for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1993/94), later as a scout for the Buffalo Sabers (1994 to 1998) and as assistant general manager of the Boston Bruins , with whom he won the Stanley Cup .
In May 2014, the Vancouver Canucks hired him as the new General Manager.
