Kelly McCrimmon (born October 13, 1960 in Plenty , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and current - functional . Since May 2019 he has been the General Manager of the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Career

Kelly McCrimmon played in his youth as a right winger for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and then for four years for the Wolverines of the University of Michigan . Since he was denied the leap into the professional field, he returned to the 1985/86 season in Canadian junior ice hockey and took over the functions of general manager and head coach of the North Battleford North Stars in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League . After another year in the same personal union with the Lloydminster Lancers , he was brought back to the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 1988/89 season, where he worked for a year as assistant coach and then took over the position of general manager again.

As "GM" McCrimmon directed the fortunes of the Wheat Kings for over 25 years, in which he had also acquired a minority stake from 1992/93 and acted as the main owner of the franchise from 2000/01 . During this time, the team won the WHL playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup twice (1996 & 2016). After the second success, the Canadian was introduced as an assistant to General Manager George McPhee at the newly formed Vegas Golden Knights from the National Hockey League (NHL). After the team's second NHL season, he was succeeded by McPhee, who stayed with the organization as President of Hockey Operations .

His brother Brad McCrimmon played over 1000 games in the NHL, was later also active as a coach and died in 2011 in the Yaroslavl plane crash .
