Nick Holden (born May 15, 1987 in St. Albert , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League since July 2018 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Nick Holden began his junior career in the Alberta Junior Hockey League , where he was active for the Camrose Kodiaks and the Sherwood Park Crusaders . For the 2006/07 season he then moved to the Chilliwack Bruins in the Western Hockey League , where he was named captain of the team a year later . In the 2007/08 season he scored a total of 22 goals in 70 games and gave 38 assists, making him the top defender statistics for the Bruins. He was also the most successful goalscorer among defenders in the WHL.

However, he was not selected by any team in the NHL Entry Draft and signed a three-year entry contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent in March 2008 . He was then initially included in the squad of the Syracuse Crunch , the farm team of the Blue Jackets, and played a league game in the American Hockey League in the 2007/08 season . In the following season he moved permanently to Syracuse and spent two seasons there, in which he scored 45 points and he had a plus / minus balance of −20.

For the 2010/11 season , the Blue Jackets changed their AHL partner, so Holden switched to the Springfield Falcons , the new farm team. Shortly after the start of the season, the defender was appointed to the squad of the NHL team for the first time and made his debut for Columbus on October 20, 2010. After five games in which Holden remained pointless and punished, he was back at the end of the month sent to Springfield in the AHL and completed the remaining 67 games there. After his contract expired after the season, he signed a new two-way contract for one year with the Blue Jackets as a restricted free agent . However, he was only used in 25 AHL games with the Falcons in the following season.

For the 2012/13 season he again signed a one-year contract with his team and started the season again in Springfield due to the lockout . After the NHL had resumed its gaming operations, however, he was appointed to the NHL roster of the Blue Jackets.

In July 2013, Holden signed a two-year contract with Colorado Avalanche . In June 2016, Holden was handed over to the New York Rangers , who in return sent a four-round vote for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft to Colorado. After almost a year and a half in New York, the Rangers transferred him to the Boston Bruins and received Rob O'Gara and a third-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . There he ended the 2017/18 season, but received no further contract, so he joined the Vegas Golden Knights as a free agent .
