Jonathon "Jon" Merrill (born February 3, 1992 in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League since June 2017 . Previously, the defender spent four years in the New Jersey Devils organization .

Career

youth

Jon Merrill was born in Oklahoma City, where his father served in the US Air Force , and moved back to Michigan , where his family is actually based , at the age of three . There he lived first in Grand Blanc , later in Brighton , and began playing ice hockey at the age of four in neighboring Flint Township - together with his two-year older brother, who later made it into the third division of the NCAA . Merrill later played in the youth field with the Detroit Little Caesars , where he gave the University of Michigan an oral promise at the age of 14 that he would later study at the university and want to play on a scholarship for the Michigan Wolverines . At that time he was the youngest player to sign a team of the NCAA in this form .

With the beginning of the 2008/09 season he was accepted into the USA Hockey National Team Development Program of USA Hockey , which is the central talent factory of the American Ice Hockey Association. Within the support program, which is based in Ann Arbor and thus also in Michigan, he played for the U17 and U18 teams in various leagues, including the North American Hockey League and the United States Hockey League . He also represented the U18 national team of the United States at the U18 World Junior Championships in 2009 and 2010 and won the gold medal with the team at both tournaments.

In Ann Arbor, Merrill attended Pioneer High School , where several classmates filed allegations of sexual harassment against him and other teammates in January 2010 . He was subsequently suspended for a short time. With the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Merrill then moved to the University of Michigan, as expected, and from then on played for their Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA's Central Collegiate Hockey Association .

In his freshman season he already scored 25 points in 42 games and was elected to the CCHA All-Rookie Team at the end of the regular season . In addition, the Wolverines finished the regular season in first place and took part in the national championship of the NCAA. There the team prevailed in the regional eliminations and thus took part in the Frozen Four in Saint Paul , Minnesota . The team reached the final by beating the University of North Dakota and only had to admit defeat to the team from the University of Minnesota Duluth . Merrill was elected to the All-Tournament Team. After this success as the second best university team in the country, he traveled with the U20 national team to the U20 Junior World Cup 2011 to win the bronze medal there. With these achievements, Merrill also made scouts of the National Hockey League attention, so that he was selected in the subsequent NHL Entry Draft of 2011 in 38th position by the New Jersey Devils .

In his sophomore year, Merrill was only on the ice in 19 Wolverines games as he was suspended for much of the season by head coach Red Berenson . After he was expelled from the team for twelve games in October 2011 for violating the team rules ("breaking unspecified team rules" - the exact incident was not known), Berenson extended the suspension indefinitely in November. During this period, Merrill considered leaving the university and, in order not to endanger his ice hockey career, to join the Plymouth Whalers from the Canadian Ontario Hockey League - they held the OHL rights to him through the Priority Selection from 2008. However, Merrill decided against it and was taken back to the Wolverines squad after a total of 22 games suspension. By the end of the 2011/12 season, he had 11 points from 19 games. He also took part in the U20 World Cup again, but only achieved seventh place with the team.

After missing the first half of the 2012/13 season due to a broken vertebra , he only played 21 games for the Wolverines by the end of the season before signing a three-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils in March 2013 .

NHL

The New Jersey Devils passed it on directly to the Albany Devils , who serve as their farm team in the American Hockey League . There he was on the ice twelve times until the end of the 2012/13 AHL season. After he had also spent the beginning of the 2013/14 season in Albany, he was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time in early November. He made his NHL debut on November 3, 2013 in the game against the Minnesota Wild , where he was only a few minutes on the ice before he slipped into the gang after a duel with Torrey Mitchell . Merrill sustained multiple superficial facial injuries and a concussion and was out for three weeks; he also only remembers the incident with video recordings. After recovering from injury, the defender established himself in the New Jersey Devils squad and played 52 games by the end of the season.

The season 2014/15 Merrill spent the first time completely in the roster of the New Jersey Devils and came to 66 appearances in the NHL. In June 2017, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . With the team he surprisingly reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs , but lost to the Washington Capitals there .
