Nick Cousins (born July 20, 1993 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays for them on the position of the center .
Career
Nick Cousins played in the 2008/09 season for the Trenton Hercs in the Ontario Junior Hockey League , a Canadian junior league. In the Priority Selection 2009 of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), in which the OHL teams had the opportunity to obtain rights to talented young players, the center was in the second round in 21st overall position by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds selected. He then switched to the greyhounds and completed 67 games for Sault Ste in the 2009/10 OHL season . Marie, in which he was able to achieve 32 scorer points . In the following play-offs he was eliminated with his team in the first round against the Plymouth Whalers .
In the 2010/11 season , Cousins was able to improve its point average significantly and achieved as many points in 68 games. The greyhounds missed the play-offs this season. Following the season Nick Cousins was selected in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in a total of 68th position by the Philadelphia Flyers . The player returned to Sault Ste with the start of the 2011/12 OHL season . Marie Greyhounds back and increased his points yield again; his 88 scorer points were the fifth most in the league. Despite these good offensive values, the greyhounds missed the final round as in the previous season.
In the 2012/13 OHL season , Cousins was named Player of the Month for January 2013. This month he scored 20 points in 11 games, including 17 assists . In total, Cousins played 64 OHL games this season and scored 103 points, making him the third best scorer in the league behind Vincent Trocheck (109) and Charles Sarault (108). In the OHL play-offs 2013 he was eliminated with the greyhounds in the first round against the Owen Sound Attack .
After he had spent the 2013/14 season completely in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Adirondack Phantoms , he made his debut in the NHL the following season and made eleven appearances for the Flyers. At times, the center forward played for Philadelphia's new farm team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms , before he made it to the regular squad of the NHL club during the 2015/16 season . After completing his first full season there in the 2016/17 season, he was transferred to league rivals Arizona Coyotes in June 2017 as part of a transfer deal .
Subsequently, Cousins was active for the Coyotes for two years and achieved his best NHL statistic to date with 27 points in the 2018/19 season. He then moved to the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent in July 2019 . He was active in these until the trade deadline in February 2020, when he was given to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a four-round vote in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft .
International
Nick Cousins represented his home country with the Canadian national team for the first time in an international competition at the 2011 U18 World Youth Championship . At this tournament, the Canadians remained without a medal after the game for third place was lost 4-6 against the Russian selection . Previously, the team lost in the semifinals to the US team , the eventual world champion. Cousins was used in seven games during the tournament, and he scored eight points. He was behind Ryan Murphy and Ryan Murray third-best points collector of the Canadians.
