Nicolas "Nic" Hague (born December 5, 1998 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in the National Hockey League since September 2017 and has been playing there since October 2019 in the position of defender .

Career

Nicolas Hague was born in Kitchener and played there in his youth for the Kitchener Jr. Rangers and the Kitchener Dutchmen . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he moved to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the highest junior league in his home province, to the Mississauga Steelheads , who had selected him in 29th position in the OHL Priority Selection of 2014. In his first year, the defender was elected to the OHL Second All-Rookie Team and was honored with the Bobby Smith Trophy for his academic achievements . The following year he increased his personal statistics to 46 scorer points from 65 games and reached the final of the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Steelheads , in which the team was defeated by the Erie Otters with 1: 4. In the following NHL Entry Draft 2017 he was considered in 34th position by the newly formed Vegas Golden Knights . In the 2017/18 season, the Canadian took over the position of team captain in Mississauga and once again improved his offensive performance significantly, leading all defenders of the OHL with 35 goals and recording a total of 78 points. Therefore, he was honored with the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the best defensive player in the league and elected to the OHL First All-Star Team , before the entire Canadian Hockey League (CHL) honored him as CHL Defender of the Year .

After Hague signed an entry-level contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in September 2017 , he made his professional debut with their farm team , the Chicago Wolves from the American Hockey League (AHL), towards the end of the 2017/18 season . There he spent the entire 2018/19 season, at the end of which he played the final of the Calder Cup with the Wolves and had to admit defeat to the Charlotte Checkers there. At the beginning of the following season 2019/20, the defender made his debut for the Golden Knights in the National Hockey League (NHL) and has been there regularly since then.

International

Hague played his first international tournament with the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 in November , where he finished fifth with Team Canada White . He then belonged to the Canadian selection at the U18 World Cup in 2016 , which also missed the medal ranks with fourth place.
