Alec Martinez (born July 26, 1987 in Rochester Hills , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League since February 2020 . The defender previously spent over eleven years in the Los Angeles Kings organization and won the Stanley Cup with them in the 2012 and 2014 playoffs .
Career
Alec Martinez began his career as a hockey player with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, for which he was active in the United States Hockey League in the 2004/05 season . He then played for three years for the Miami University team . During this period, the defender was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 95th player by the Los Angeles Kings . The 2008/09 season spent the left-handed shooter exclusively with the Los Angeles farm team , the Manchester Monarchs from the American Hockey League , before he made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 3, 2009 in the home game against the Phoenix Coyotes .
In the 2010/11 season Martinez earned a permanent place in the NHL squad of the Kings and completed 60 missions for the team in the regular season. In the following season he won the Stanley Cup with Los Angeles in the playoffs . For the duration of the lockout in the National Hockey League, Martinez joined the TPS Turku from the Finnish SM-liiga in October 2012 , but returned to North America after eleven games and played for the remainder of the lockout in his place of residence with the Allen Americans from the Central Hockey League .
After the lockout ended, the left shooter played again for Los Angeles and was able to establish himself as a regular in the NHL squad. In the 2013/14 season , Martinez was largely responsible for the Kings second Stanley Cup victory when he first scored the decisive goal in extra time in game 7 of the series against the Chicago Blackhawks as part of the final of the Western Conference for the entry of his team into the Stanley Cup final. In the final, in turn, he succeeded in overtaking the decisive game 5 in the series against the New York Rangers, the winning goal to 3-2 final score, whereby the Kings won the Stanley Cup for the second time within three seasons. In view of these merits and his established role as a high performer in the team, his contract was extended by the Kings for six years in December 2014.
After more than eleven years, Martinez was given over by the Kings to the Vegas Golden Knights as part of a major restructuring of the roster . In return, Los Angeles received second-round voting rights for the 2020 and 2021 NHL Entry Drafts .
International
At the 2018 World Cup , Martinez took part in an international tournament for the first time and won the bronze medal there with the USA national team .
