Nate Schmidt (born July 16, 1991 in St. Cloud , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League since June 2017 . Before that he spent almost four years in the organization of the Washington Capitals .
Career
Schmidt began his career in the 2008-09 season with the ice hockey team of St. Cloud Cathedral High School in the Minnesota school league, before playing for the Fargo Force in the junior league United States Hockey League the following year . Between 2010 and 2013, the defender was on the ice for the University of Minnesota college team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , which is part of the NCAA's gaming operations .
In April 2012, Schmidt was on the National Hockey League - Organization of the Washington Capitals contracted and ended the 2012/13 season in their farm team Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . In October 2013 he was appointed to the squad of the Capitals for the first time and made his debut in the top division of North America in the game against the Colorado Avalanche . Overall, he completed 29 games in the NHL during the season, but spent a large part of the Bears in the AHL. In the following season 2014/15 he ran mainly in the NHL and made 39 missions for the Capitals , in which he was able to mark four points scorer. In the summer of 2015 Schmidt's contract was extended by two years and since the beginning of the 2015/16 season he has been part of the regular NHL squad in Washington.
In June 2017, he was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . With the team, he surprisingly reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs , but lost there to his former employer, the Washington Capitals. In addition, he was one of the many Golden Knights players in the debut season who were able to significantly increase their personal statistics, so he recorded 36 points scorer and was the second best defender of the team behind Colin Miller .
In September 2018, Schmidt was suspended for 20 games for doping . He himself stated that he unknowingly ingested the unspecified substance. In addition, it was a low concentration that could not lead to an increase in performance and could instead be explained by contaminated food. A little later, the American signed a new six-year contract in Las Vegas, which should bring him an average annual salary of $ 5.95 million from the start of the 2019/20 season.
