Walentin Walentinowitsch Sykow ( Russian Валентин Валентинович Зыков , English transcription: Valentin Valentinovich Zykov ; born May 15, 1995 in Saint Petersburg ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League since December 2018 and is there on the position of the left winger .
Career
Valentin Sykov began his career as an ice hockey player in his home country in the youth department of HK CSKA Moscow . For the 2012/13 season , the winger went to North America to the Drakkar de Baie-Comeau from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). There he convinced in his rookie season with 75 scorer points , which initially brought him the Trophée Michel Bergeron and Coupe RDS . Within the entire Canadian Hockey League , he also prevailed in the election for CHL Rookie of the Year against Connor McDavid and Seth Jones , who had received comparable awards in the Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League . During the 2014/15 season he moved within the league to the Olympiques de Gatineau .
In May 2014, the Russian was signed by the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League by a three-year entry contract after they had selected him in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in 37th position. At the beginning of the 2015/16 game year , the winger was part of the Ontario Reign squad from the American Hockey League , the Kings farm team . In February 2016, Sykow switched teams when he and a five-round success-based vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft were given to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Kris Versteeg . He made his debut in the NHL on March 9, 2017 and also scored his first goal.
In the 2017/18 season , which he also mainly spent in the American Hockey League, he led the entire AHL in goals (33) in the Charlotte Checkers jersey and was therefore awarded the Willie Marshall Award . After Sykow was unable to establish himself permanently in the NHL at the beginning of the 2018/19 season , he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers at the end of November 2018 when trying to send him to the AHL via the waiver , who took over the existing contract. After five appearances for the Oilers, he joined the Vegas Golden Knights in the same way in December 2018 . The Russian was only used sporadically there until the end of the season. It was only at the beginning of the 2019/20 season that he succeeded in permanently playing minutes in the Golden Knights squad. However, in mid-October 2019, Sykow tested positive for a prohibited substance and was banned from the league for 20 games.
