Career
Deryk Engelland began his career as a hockey player with the Moose Jaw Warriors , for which he was active from 1998 to 2003 in the Canadian junior league Western Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 in the sixth round as a total of 194th player by the New Jersey Devils , for which he never played. Instead, the defender ran from 2003 to 2005 for the Las Vegas Wranglers in the ECHL , and in the 2003/04 season in parallel for the Lowell Lock Monsters in the American Hockey League . From 2005 to 2007 he was under contract with the Hershey Bears in the AHL, but also came to missions for the South Carolina Stingrays and Reading Royals from the ECHL.
From 2007 to 2010 Engelland played for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League and made his debut in the National Hockey League for their cooperation partner Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2009/10 season . By the end of the season he was in nine NHL games in which he gave two assists. Since the 2010/11 season , the Canadian has played exclusively for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL.
Because of the NHL lockout , Engelland played at Rosenborg IHK in the Norwegian GET league from mid-October 2012 . After four years, his contract in Pittsburgh was not renewed, so he joined the Calgary Flames in July 2014 and signed a three-year contract there.
In June 2017, Engelland was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . With the team where he established himself as one of the leading players, he surprisingly reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs , but lost to the Washington Capitals there . As part of the 2018 NHL Awards , he was honored as a leader with the Mark Messier Leadership Award .
