During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the first round as a total of 28th player by the Ottawa Senators .
For Senators he made his debut in the 2007/08 season in the National Hockey League , where he also played for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Binghamton Senators . In the 2008/09 game year , the attacker played in 81 of 82 regular season games and scored a total of 32 points, including 17 goals.
On July 1, 2012, the Ottawa Senators transferred him to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Marc Methot . There he was appointed captain of the team on May 20, 2015. After the 2016/17 season he was honored with the Mark Messier Leadership Award and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for special leadership skills and social commitment. This is the first time a player has received both of these Columbus Blue Jackets.
