Raymond D. "Ray" Whitney (born May 8, 1972 in Fort Saskatchewan , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and sport who played 1438 games for the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers in the course of his active career between 1988 and 2014 , Florida Panthers , Columbus Blue Jackets , Detroit Red wings , Carolina Hurricanes , Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League on the position of left winger has denied. Whitney celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Carolina Hurricanes by winning the Stanley Cup in 2006 .

Career

Whitney played during his junior career from 1988 with the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Hockey League , one of the major junior leagues in North America. In the 1990/91 season, the right -handed shooter was elected to the league's all-star team and named best player of the year.

For the 1991/92 season he moved to the Kölner Haien . He left this but after a few games and signed a contract with the newly founded San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League , of which he had been selected a total of 23rd place in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft . He played for the Californians and their farm teams until 1997 , before moving to the Edmonton Oilers . Shortly after the start of the 1997/98 season he moved on to the Florida Panthers and in 2000 to the Columbus Blue Jackets , for which he was active for three more years and in the meantime acted as team captain.

The 2003/04 season Whitney spent with the Detroit Red Wings , a year later he did not play due to the lockout . In 2005/06 he joined the Carolina Hurricanes for two years . The greatest success of his career Whitney celebrated in the 2005/06 season , in which he won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes . In 2000 and 2003 he was named to the NHL All-Star Game . On July 1, 2010, he signed a two-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes .

On March 31, 2012, he scored in his 1,226th NHL game in the regular season, a goal and an assist against the Anaheim Ducks and reached the mark of 1,000 points as the 79th player in the history of the league .

After the 2011/12 season , Whitney became a free agent and signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Stars . His contract expired in June 2014, which meant that he was now looking for a new employer as a free agent . In January 2015, he announced the end of his active career. He got 1064 points scorer in 1330 NHL missions. After his career ended, he worked as a scout for his ex-team from Carolina between 2015 and 2018 .
