Johann of the Alps

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann von Alpen (also Johannes (von) Alpen , probably actually Johann Wolfgang Ripp ; * 1630 in Alpen ; † May 20, 1698 ) was vicar general in the diocese of Münster .

Life

Johann von Alpen worked as a pastor in Osterwick from 1657 until he was appointed a clergyman by the Bishop of Munster Christoph Bernhard von Galen in 1660 . In 1661 Johann von Alpen became vicar general of the diocese for the deaneries outside the episcopal city of Munster and from 1663 also for Munster itself. From 1678 he exercised these offices under von Galen's successor, Bishop Ferdinand von Fürstenberg . 1682 is mentioned by Alpen as provost in Xanten and lord of the Alps. Johann von Alpen wrote a 1500-page biography of Christoph Bernhard von Galen in Latin , which was particularly important because of its documentary material , also in response to a diatribe in Dutch that appeared shortly after von Galen's death . After his death in 1698, von Alpen was buried in St. Martini in Münster, where he was dean from 1663 to 1698.
