He led the team as captain for four years and holds a number of franchise records there , including most games, goals, assists and scorer points. He also won the 2004 Maurice Richard Trophy in the Blue Jackets jersey as the NHL's top scorer. He later reached the final of the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in the 2014 playoffs , but lost to the Los Angeles Kings . On an international level, the attacker won gold medals with the Canadian national team at the 2007 World Cup and the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics .
Career
Beginnings in Canadian junior leagues
Nash began his career in 1998 in a lower-tier Canadian junior league. In the 1999/2000 season he went on the ice for the Toronto Marlboros in the Greater Toronto Hockey League . His good performance led to the fact that the left-handed shooter was selected in the first round in the first round of the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League at the OHL Priority Selection 2000 . In his first season with the Knights, he was one of the team's best strikers with 66 points in 58 main round games. With his team he was able to successfully qualify for the subsequent playoffs. There the Knights were eliminated with 1: 4 defeats against the Erie Otters . Nash get six more points in four playoff games. In the 2001/02 season , the left shooter was able to increase and reached the playoff semifinals with his team. Nash completed a total of 66 league games and was able to score 91 times. Due to the performances shown, several talent scouts from the National Hockey League became aware of the then 18-year-old. During the NHL Entry Draft 2002 it was those responsible for the Columbus Blue Jackets who secured his transfer rights. They selected him as the overall first in the draft .
Establishment in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets
In the summer of 2002, the Canadian left the Ontario Hockey League after only two years and moved to the NHL for the Columbus Blue Jackets. On October 10, 2002, Nash made his debut in the NHL and scored his first goal. This made him the eighth overall first of an NHL Entry Draft to score a goal in his first NHL game. In the further course of the 2002/03 season Nash was used 74 times and scored 78 points scorer. He was also nominated for the best newcomer to the league for the Calder Memorial Trophy , but did not win it, but was called to the NHL All-Rookie Team .
In the 2003/04 season , the left winger scored 41 goals and won the Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy for the best goalscorer of the regular season together with his compatriot Jarome Iginla and the Russian Ilya Kovalchuk . At 19, he was also the youngest player in NHL history to top the scorers list after the regular season. Nash was only able to surpass this goal yield eleven years later.
Since the 2004/05 season did not take place due to the players' strike in the NHL, many players decided to spend the 2004/05 season in Europe or the North American minor leagues . Rick Nash joined the Swiss first division club HC Davos , where he won the Swiss championship and the Spengler Cup together with Joe Thornton and Niklas Hagman . Nash had a large share in these successes with 58 points in 59 games. In summer 2005 he returned to Columbus . Prior to the 2005/06 season , he signed a new five-year contract with the Blue Jackets that brought him $ 27 million by 2011. After a few games of the season, he suffered several injuries and missed a total of 28 games. Despite the protracted injuries, Nash scored 54 points in as many missions and was once again one of the most successful players in the Blue Jackets.
On March 12, 2008, Nash was named the fifth team captain of the Blue Jackets. A month later, 2K Games announced that Nash would be featured on the cover of the NHL 2K9 computer game . The first season as captain was his personally most successful when he scored 40 goals and 39 assists in 78 games . At the end of the season he was able to qualify for the playoffs for the first time with his club. There the Blue Jackets met the champions of the 2007/08 season , the Detroit Red Wings . With 0: 4 defeats, the team was eliminated against the Red Wings without winning a game in the best-of-seven series. During the summer break of 2009, those responsible for Columbus Blue Jackets were able to convince Nash of an early contract extension. The left shooter signed an eight-year contract that began at the end of the 2010/11 season .
Move to New York
After the offensive player had expressed a change request in February 2012, he was transferred to the New York Rangers on July 23, 2012 after ten years in Columbus . In return, the Blue Jackets received strikers Brandon Dubinsky and Artyom Anissimow , defender Tim Erixon and a first-round vote for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft .
Due to the renewed lockout in the NHL, Nash decided to switch back to HC Davos in Switzerland, for which he only played twelve games due to a shoulder injury. After the lockout ended, the Canadian returned to New York and played a solid main round with 41 scorer points, but could not convince in the playoffs with just one goal from twelve games. The second season in the jersey of the Broadway Blueshirts was also not overly successful for the left-handed shooter, so that critical voices were raised in New York that Nash could not meet the expectations placed on him. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season he was ultimately able to build on his earlier achievements from the time in Columbus; The attacker played his most dangerous season since the 2008/09 season with a total of 42 hits and 69 points , making him the Rangers' strongest offensive player, which is why he was recognized as the most valuable player in his team in the main round. In the 2017/18 season , Nash played his 1,000th game in the NHL in the Rangers jersey.
Boston Bruins and Retired
After six years in New York, Nash was handed over to the Boston Bruins in February 2018 just before the trade deadline . In return, the Rangers Ryan Spooner , Matt Beleskey , Ryan Lindgren received a first-round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and a seventh-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . Additionally, both parties continued to pay 50% of Nash and Beleskey's respective salaries. In Boston, Nash ended the 2017/18 season before his expiring contract was not renewed.
As a result, Nash did not join a new team for the 2018/19 season , but this option remained open for the time being. However, in January 2019 it was announced that the Canadian would not be able to continue his career for health reasons. He continues to suffer from symptoms of a concussion he suffered in March 2018 , so that the risk of serious long-term effects ( chronic traumatic encephalopathy ) was assessed as too high. In total, Nash had completed 1149 NHL games and recorded 851 points scorer.
International
Nash is one of the most successful Canadian internationals ever. While he only completed the U20 World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic in 2002 and won the silver medal in the junior division, he took part in numerous international tournaments with the Canadian national team in the men's division .
In the spring of 2005, Nash was nominated for the first time for the national team and played the 2005 World Cup in Austria . As in the junior division, he was able to secure the silver medal. with nine goals in as many games he was also the top scorer of the tournament, with 15 points behind his teammate Joe Thornton second best scorer and was appointed to the All-Star team. With his achievements, he therefore recommended himself and was nominated almost a year later for the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy . There he only reached seventh place with the Olympic selection as defending champion. Despite the disappointment, the attacker remained available for the national team and became world champion with Team Canada after a 4-2 victory over Finland during the 2007 World Cup in Russia . With eleven points, he was again one of the best players on the team, which earned him the award of most valuable player in the world championships. He was also back on the All-Star team. He was also a member of the World Cup in 2008 when he won another silver medal with the maple leaves .
In the following years, Nash contested with the 2011 World Cup, in which he led the Canadian squad as team captain, only one tournament of this kind, which was rather disappointing with fifth place in the final standings. Instead, however, the striker celebrated at the Olympic Winter Games in the years 2010 in Canadian Vancouver and 2014 in the Russian Sochi by winning Olympic gold the greatest success of his career. Nash wore the jersey of the Canadian national team 53 times and scored 51 points. In particular at world championships he was always one of the outstanding Canadian players with 44 points in 34 games.
