Alexandre Daigle (* 7. February 1975 in Montreal , Quebec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his career including for the Ottawa Senators , Philadelphia Flyers , Tampa Bay Lightning , New York Rangers , Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League and the HC Davos , Friborg-Gottéron and SCL Tigers in the Swiss National League A played. Daigle was selected in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft as the overall first by the Ottawa Senators.
Career
Alexandre Daigle was traded as one of North America's greatest ice hockey talents and a possible successor to Wayne Gretzky . Already in the Junior League Québec Major Junior Hockey League he broke several records and received several awards for his skills on the ice. Daigle was to be selected by an NHL team in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft . The Ottawa Senators played especially badly at the end of the season because they had missed the playoff places to finish last in the league and thus had the first right to vote in the NHL Entry Draft , as they were particularly interested in Daigle. They chose Alexandre Daigle with their full voting rights and even preferred him to later NHL regulars like Chris Pronger or Paul Kariya .
Daigle won a five-year contract that should bring him a total of $ 12.25 million, the largest contract ever received by a rookie in the history of the NHL. As a result, the NHL introduced a salary cap for new professionals a little later.
Daigle never lived up to expectations. He was playfully overshadowed by the Russian Alexei Yashin and was often criticized for not showing enough commitment and motivation. After several disappointing seasons, management and fans had enough and Daigle was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in January 1998 . In the following two years he also played for the Tampa Bay Lightning and the New York Rangers . In 2000 he ended his career because he wanted to start a career in Hollywood .
In the fall of 2002 he returned to the ice hockey business. He signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins , where he played for a year. The contract expired and was not renewed. The Minnesota Wild signed him and in his first season he set his personal record with 51 points.
In March 2006, the Houston Eros was sent to the American Hockey League . For this he did not play a game and was given to the Manchester Monarchs after only a week within the league .
On May 5, 2006 it was announced that Daigle had signed a two-year contract with the Swiss team HC Davos . In the 2006/07 season of the National League A , he finished second on the scorer list with 61 points in 44 games and won the championship title with HC Davos. In December 2006, his contract was extended to 2011. In the 2008/09 season he won his second championship with the Davos, but scored fewer points scorer than before. The Canadian spent most of the following season with the SCL Tigers , where he was on loan and who also managed to stay in the league thanks to his services. However, in April 2010 his contract was terminated by HC Davos, and Daigle subsequently became a free agent.
