Marty Vincent Turco (born August 13, 1975 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper . Between 2000 and 2012 he played over 500 games in the National Hockey League for the Dallas Stars , Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins . He played most of his career for the Dallas Stars, where he holds a number of franchise records and in whose jersey he won the Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award twice. Turco also won the silver medal with the Canadian national team at the 2005 World Cup .
Career
Marty Turco was selected in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars in the fifth round at position 124. After the draft he played for the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , where he made a name for himself with good performances. In the summer of 1998 he moved to the International Hockey League for the Michigan K-Wings , where he played for two years and was able to recommend himself for the National Hockey League .
At the beginning of the 2000/01 season , the Stars brought him into their NHL squad. As number two behind Ed Belfour, he denied the season and was awarded the Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award for the goalkeeper with the best catch quota. After another season as a reserve goalkeeper, after Ed Belfour left the team , Turco became the number one Dallas Stars . And at the end of the 2002/03 season he was elected to the NHL Second Allstar Team and honored for the second time with the Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award, whereby his Goals Against Average of 1.72 was a record of the "modern era" in the NHL - the record was broken a year later by Miikka Kiprusoff . Marty Turco did a great job the following season, but again the Dallas Stars had no chance in the championship fight. Turco had played an excellent regular season, so he brought only poor performance in the playoffs . Even so, he received recognition for his performance and was named the first goalkeeper of the Western Conference in the 2004 NHL All-Star Game .
The 2004/05 season fell in the National Hockey League because of the lockout , Marty Turco moved to the Swedish Elitserien to Djurgårdens IF , but stayed only a month. In the 2005/06 season he played very well again and was able to win a total of 41 games, which he set a personal record and was third in the league among goalkeepers. Although his team went into the playoffs as one of the main favorites (2nd place in the Western Conference ), there was already in the first round a bitter end against the Colorado Avalanche , as the defensive of the stars and especially Turco again showed weaknesses.
In the 2006/07 season Turco was again a member of the Western All-Star Team, where he was awarded the victory by conceding two goals in the final third. The stars went into the playoffs as sixth in the West after an only partially successful regular season and a clear defeat against the Vancouver Canucks led by Roberto Luongo was predicted, precisely because of Turco's old instability in the playoffs. Although the stars lost the series just 3: 4, Turco managed a shutout in all three wins , so in each case without conceding a goal. He showed that the experts might have been wrong about him. He finally proved this the following year when the Dallas Stars went into the playoffs in fifth place, defeating the two Stanley Cup co-favorites Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks . Turco was one of the pillars of the team with its excellent performance. It was not until the Western Conference Finals that they failed 4-2 at the eventual Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings .
In the summer of 2010, Turco's expiring contract was not extended. At first he couldn't find a new club and was only signed by the Stanley Cup winners, the Chicago Blackhawks , in August after they could not agree on a contract with their previous goalkeeper Antti Niemi . After the end of the 2010/11 season , they did not extend his contract.
After Turco was signed by EC Red Bull Salzburg in December 2011 for the duration of the final tournament of the European Trophy 2011 , which he won with the Salzburg team, he signed a contract with the same club at the end of January 2012 until the end of the season. After Salzburg's early elimination in the quarterfinals, Turco returned to the NHL. There he was committed on March 5, 2012 for the remainder of the 2011/12 season by the Boston Bruins . He then ended his active career.
