After Luongo was selected in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in fourth position by the New York Islanders, he only spent one season in New York. The Canadian then ran for the Florida Panthers between 2000 and 2006. This was followed by eight seasons at the Vancouver Canucks between 2006 and 2014, with which he reached the Stanley Cup finals in 2011 and lost to the Boston Bruins there . He also led the Canucks for two years as captain and was honored with the William M. Jennings Trophy and the Mark Messier Leadership Award . In 2014 he returned to Florida, where he finished five years later his career and where his jersey number 1 since March 2020 blocked is. Luongo holds a number of franchise records with both the Panthers and Canucks . In addition, he is the third goalkeeper in NHL history, after Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur , to play at least 1,000 regular season games.

With the Canadian national team , Luongo took part in the World Championships in 2003 and 2004 and won gold medals, as well as the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 and the Winter Olympics in 2010 and 2014 .

Career

Beginnings (until 1995)

Roberto Luongo, the son of an Italian immigrant and an Irish - Canadian mother, began playing ice hockey at the age of eight. Even then, he had the desire to play in the position of ice hockey goalkeeper. The family lived in Saint-Léonard , a parish near Montreal . Luongo was fluent in English, French and Italian as a child. He also played soccer with his father and two brothers before he decided to play the Canadian national sport. During his school days he dreamed of a professional career as an ice hockey player. At that time he played as a field player and only later switched to the goalkeeping position. As a role model, he always named the former goalkeeper Grant Fuhr . At the age of 15 he went on the ice for Montreal-Bourassa in the QAAA , a junior junior league.

Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (1995–1999)

In 1995, the Foreurs de Val-d'Or from the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec secured the rights to Luongo: In the "Midget Draft", the usual selection process of the junior league, which corresponds to the entry draft of the Canadian professional leagues, the elected Club Luongo in second place. This made him the highest selected goalkeeper in the history of the league. In the 1995/96 season he made his first appearances for the team and won six of 23 regular season games. As a regular goalkeeper of the Foreurs de Val-d'Or, he won 32 of 60 matches with the team in the 1996/97 season. After the end of the season, Luongo was awarded the Michael Bossy Trophy as the most hopeful talent of the year. In the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in fourth position by the New York Islanders . He then continued his career with the Foreurs de Val-d'Or in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League.

In the 1997/98 season he improved his record compared to the previous season and finished seven of 54 games in the regular season without conceding a goal. With seven shutouts , he holds the LHJMQ record together with Nick Sanza , Adam Russo and Kevin Poulin . In the playoffs he won 14 of 17 matches with the team and for the first time in his career he won the Coupe du Président , the championship of the LHJMQ. In the same year he took part in the Memorial Cup with the team as the champion of the LHJMQ , but remained unsuccessful at the tournament and finished it in last place. In September 1998, the goalkeeper was invited to the New York Islanders training camp, where he stood out for his concentrated performance and a nimble catching hand. Due to inconsistent performances, he was sent to the juniors a month later because Luongo was too young to play in the American Hockey League . As in the previous year, he began the 1998/99 season with the Foreurs de Val-d'Or. In the course of the season they gave him within the Québec Major Junior Hockey League to the Titan d'Acadie-Bathurst . Luongo also had a successful season with the Titan d'Acadie-Bathurst and won the Coupe du Président for the second time in his career at the end of the 1998/99 season.

New York Islanders (1999-2000)

In January 1999, Luongo signed a three-year contract worth over $ 2.5 million with the New York Islanders. In the 1999/2000 season he made his debut for the Lowell Lock Monsters , the then farm team of the New York Islanders, in the American Hockey League. On November 22, 1999, Luongo was named to the New York Islanders NHL roster after Wade Flaherty sustained an injury. A few days later, Luongo played his first game for the Islanders and allowed a goal against the Boston Bruins with 44 shots. On December 27, 1999, Luongo posted his first shutout in the National Hockey League when he parried all 34 shots on goal in the encounter against the Boston Bruins. In January 2000, Luongo was criticized by General Manager Mike Milbury for his behavior before the game against the Bruins, when he had been looking for an apartment a few hours before the encounter in New York and had to concede seven goals in the game himself. Milbury accused Luongo of poor preparation and lack of focus for the game. By the end of the season, Luongo made 24 appearances for the Islanders in the National Hockey League and achieved a catch rate of 90.4 percent. In the NHL Entry Draft 2000 , the management of the New York Islanders selected goalkeeper Rick DiPietro in first overall position . To make room for DiPietro in the squad, the Islanders gave Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen to the Florida Panthers in a transfer deal on the same day .

Florida Panthers (2000-2006)

Luongo in the jersey of the Florida Panthers

Luongo was surprised by his move to Florida, as the New York Islanders had planned with him as their goalkeeper around a year earlier. With the Panthers he formed a goalkeeper duo with the experienced Trevor Kidd during the 2000/01 season . Head coach Terry Murray used Trevor Kidd as a regular goalkeeper at the beginning of the season, as he had significantly more experience than Luongo. In his rookie season , Luongo completed a total of 47 NHL games for the Panthers and saved 92 percent of shots on goal. Although he had previously stood in 24 games for the New York Islanders on the ice, he was counted as a newcomer because Luongo had completed fewer than 26 games in the National Hockey League in the 1999/2000 season. On April 7, 2001, in the encounter against the New York Rangers , he set a new franchise record for the Florida Panthers for most games in a clean-sheet season with his fifth shutout . Luongo ended his first season with the Panthers in twelfth place in the Eastern Conference and clearly missed qualifying for the playoffs. On September 13, 2001, he signed a new four-year contract with the Florida Panthers. The following year Luongo was nominated for the first NHL YoungStars Game in the history of the National Hockey League. In the 2001/02 season he prevailed as a regular goalkeeper in Florida and guarded the goal of the Panthers in 58 encounters. In March 2002, he suffered a torn ligament in his right ankle and was out for the remainder of the season.

For the 2002/03 season , Luongo returned to the ice after his recovery and again prevailed as a regular goalkeeper. In the course of the season he came to 65 missions in the NHL and remained in March 2003 in 144: 51 minutes in a row without conceding, which meant a franchise record. Again he did not qualify for the finals with the Florida Panthers. Luongo set an NHL record in the 2003/04 season with 2303 saved shots in one season. Because of his good performance, he was nominated for the Vezina Trophy (best goalkeeper) and the Lester B. Pearson Award (best player). With a catch rate of 93.1 percent, he was the best goalkeeper in the 2003/04 season who had completed at least 50 matches. During the season he was nominated in the NHL All-Star Game as a substitute goalkeeper of the Eastern Conference. Again he did not qualify for the playoffs with the Florida Panthers. At the end of the season, Luongo was elected to the NHL Second All-Star Team .

During the 2004/05 season , when the game operation of the National Hockey League was prevented by a lockout , Luongo did not like many other players an engagement in Europe or played in one of the minor leagues. Instead, the Canadian national team went on the ice at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2005 Ice Hockey World Championship . After he rejected a five-year contract offer by the Florida Panthers worth approximately $ 25 million in August 2005, the Panthers' management filed for arbitration with the NHL. The arbitral tribunal awarded Luongo a one-year contract worth $ 3.2 million. During the 2005-06 season , he was the second goalkeeper in franchise history after John Vanbiesbrouck to hit 100 regular-season wins in the National Hockey League. With 35 wins this season, Luongo set another record for the Panthers. In January 2006, the Florida Panthers management offered him a new five-year contract worth $ 30 million. Luongo declined the offer, however, as he wanted a shorter contract period.

Vancouver Canucks (2006-2014)

Luongo in the jersey of the Vancouver Canucks

In June 2006, Luongo moved as part of a swap to the Vancouver Canucks , together with Lukáš Krajíček and a six-round suffrage, with the Canucks goalkeepers Alex Auld , Todd Bertuzzi and Bryan Allen transferred to Florida. Luongo was disappointed with the Panthers' decision to have him transferred to Vancouver, as he had expected an agreement on a new contract in Florida after the progress made in recent days. In Vancouver he signed a four-year contract worth around $ 27 million. This prevented Luongo from becoming a free agent after his contract in Florida expired in July 2006 . Luongo said he wanted to play for the Stanley Cup with the Canucks after never having the chance in Florida. In Vancouver, the expectations of Luongo and the team were higher than in Florida and the goal of making the playoffs. On his NHL debut for the Canucks, Luongo led the team to a 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings . That same month, Luongo played his first clean sheet game for the Vancouver Canucks when he saved 32 shots on goal in an encounter against the Chicago Blackhawks . On January 9, 2007, he was nominated in a fan vote in the starting lineup of the Western Conference for the NHL All-Star Game . A few days later, he was injured while exercising when Luongo was hit by a puck on his neck and subsequently spent a night in the intensive care unit . The same evening after his discharge from the hospital, he returned to the ice and finished the game against the Montréal Canadiens without conceding. In March 2007, his 39th win of the season broke the Vancouver Canucks franchise record for most goalkeeper wins in one season. The 2006/07 season ended Luongo with 47 wins, the second-best record of a goalkeeper in the history of the league.

In his first playoff game on April 11, 2007 against the Dallas Stars , Luongo parried 72 of 76 shots on goal and was instrumental in the victory of the Canucks, who decided the match with a goal in the fourth overtime. The 76 shots on goal that he received in this encounter on his goal were a new high during the playoffs in the history of the National Hockey League. In the first round of the playoffs, Luongo prevailed with the Canucks in seven encounters against the Dallas Stars. A round later, the Vancouver Canucks were defeated in five games by the Anaheim Ducks . In the decisive fifth game, Luongo parried 56 shots on goal by the Ducks before Scott Niedermayer sealed the elimination of the Canucks with a goal in the second extra time. At the end of the season he narrowly failed to Martin Brodeur for the Vezina Trophy as best goalkeeper of the season and to Sidney Crosby for the Hart Memorial Trophy as best player of the season and the Lester B. Pearson Award as most valuable player of the regular season. In December 2007 Luongo achieved a franchise record with three shutouts and a series of 210: 34 minutes in a row without conceding a goal. In January 2008 he was nominated for the NHL All-Star Game , but Luongo gave this a rejection for private reasons. At the end of the season, he missed the Canucks move into the playoffs, as seven of the last eight games of the regular season were lost. Prior to the 2008-09 season , the Vancouver Canucks management appointed Roberto Luongo as team captain . Luongo called his appointment as team captain a tremendous honor and added that he will face the challenges. General Manager Mike Gillis stated that the National Hockey League regulations do not allow Luongo to wear the "C" on his jersey and that he is not allowed to exercise his office during the games. As a result, he was represented by the assistant captains. However, the teams are allowed to nominate a goalkeeper as team captain.

During the season Luongo wore the "C" on the goalkeeper's mask , this did not conflict with the regulations of the National Hockey League. In November 2008, as in the previous year, he got three shutouts in a row. In the same month he dropped out of play due to an injury to the groin region. He returned to the ice in mid-January 2009 after the goalkeeper missed 24 matches due to injury. During his injury break Luongo was nominated for the NHL All-Star Game in January 2009 to the team of the Western Conference. He finished the 2008/09 season with a catch rate of 92 percent and nine games without conceding a goal. With the Canucks he reached the playoffs again after a year of absence. In the first round, Luongo and the team defeated the St. Louis Blues in four games, in which he was instrumental in the success of the Canucks and was voted player of the game in three matches. In the second round he lost with the Canucks in six encounters against the Chicago Blackhawks . After failing in the playoffs, Luongo was harshly criticized for his performance as he conceded seven goals in the decisive game of the series and it was questioned whether the Canucks would not give him in a barter deal, as Luongo is one of the top earners for the team and a balanced goalkeeper duo could be financed with far less salary expenses. Since Luongo's contract had a no-trade clause , the Canucks could only have transferred the goalkeeper to another team with his consent.

In June 2009 he was voted the league's most popular player in a fan poll and received the Scotiabank / NHL Fan Fav Award . In September 2009, Luongo reached an agreement with the management of Vancouver Canucks to extend the contract for twelve years to 2022. The contract is valued at $ 64 million and Luongo's average salary is $ 5.33 million per year. A clause was stipulated in the contract that allows Luongo to transfer to another team without restrictions after a five-year contract period. After a seven-year contract term, the Canucks have the option of bartering the goalkeeper to another franchise . On October 25, 2009, he posted his 21st shutout in the Vancouver Canucks jersey, surpassing the previous team-internal record that Kirk McLean had previously held with 20 games without conceding a goal. During the 2009/10 season Luongo managed to finish his 50th game in the National Hockey League without conceding a goal. After the end of the regular season, the Canucks ranked again in first place in the Northwest Division and again moved into the playoffs. After a first round victory over the Los Angeles Kings , Luongo failed with the team - as in the previous year - in the Conference semi-finals at the Chicago Blackhawks. In September 2010, Luongo resigned after two years as the Canucks team captain. Also in the 2010/11 season , the Vancouver Canucks started as one of the best teams in their division, to which Luongo was involved with his good performance and was voted NHL's second star of the month , the second best player of the month of the NHL, of December 2010 . Luongo remained set as the Canucks goalkeeper during the season, with Cory Schneider representing him in some matches . On March 5, 2011 Luongo succeeded as the 25th goalie in history to record the 300th NHL victory . In the final games of the Stanley Cup of the 2010/11 season, Luongo was particularly noticeable due to his strong fluctuations in performance. While he saved almost 98 percent of all shots at his goal in the first three home games, the Canadian saved less than 78 percent of the Bruins' shots in the three away games in Boston. The reasons for this are unknown, but a plausible explanation for these exceptionally strong differences in performance has not been found. After the 4-0 defeat in the seventh final game against the Boston Bruins, Luongo missed the Canucks to win the Stanley Cup for the first time.

Return to the Florida Panthers (2014-2019)

After eight years in Vancouver, the Canucks transferred Luongo back to the Florida Panthers on March 4, 2014, one day before the trade deadline . In return, the Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Markström and center Shawn Matthias moved to Vancouver. Since Luongo's contract was seen as a major barrier to a transfer, the Canucks also took 15% of his salary. In April 2018 he played his 1000th regular season game in the NHL in the Panthers jersey, a milestone that had only been reached by Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur before him . After the end of the 2018/19 season , the now 40-year-old announced the end of his active career at the end of June 2019. At that time, his current contract was still valid for three years.

In March 2020 Luongos jersey number 1 was from the Florida Panthers locked and is therefore no longer awarded. He is the first player to receive this honor in the history of the franchise. The team was not only taking into account its achievements on the ice, but also its social commitment, for example after the Parkland massacre .

International

Luongo in the jersey of the Canadian national team

Luongo represented the Canadian national team for the first time at the 1998 Junior World Championship . As the second goalkeeper behind Mathieu Garon , he made three appearances during the tournament and finished eighth with the team. A year later he was the goalkeeper in the goal of the Canadians at the U20 World Junior Championships in 1999 and finished two of seven matches without a goal. In the first game against Slovakia, he saved 36 shots and managed his first shutout . Luongo led the Canadian team into the final of the Junior World Championship and lost to the Russian team 2-3 in overtime . Thus he won the silver medal and was subsequently elected to the All-Star-Team of the World Championship and named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Luongo was appointed to the Canadian squad for the 2001 Ice Hockey World Championship . In the course of the tournament he came to two inserts and a goal rate of 1.44. The Canadian team finished the world championship in fifth place. Two years later, Luongo was initially scheduled as the second goalkeeper behind Sean Burke at the 2003 Ice Hockey World Championship , before he sustained an injury in the semi-final against the Czech Republic , which made him unable to play. Luongo completed the match in the preliminary round against Latvia and was used in the second round in the game against Switzerland and booked a shutout. After Burke's failure, he also guarded the Canadians 'goal in the final against Sweden and with 49 shots saved he played a key role in the Canadians' victory, who won 3-2 with a goal in extra time.

Luongo after winning the 2010 Olympic gold medal

At the ice hockey world championship in 2004 he was a regular goalkeeper and played seven games from the start. In the final, Luongo with Canada again prevailed against Sweden and won the world title for the second time in his career. A few months later he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey . Martin Brodeur started the tournament as a regular goalkeeper before a sprained wrist forced him to take a break and Luongo took over the position of regular goalkeeper for the semi-final against the Czech Republic. For the final Brodeur returned to the ice and prevailed with the Canadians against Finland. He was also the second goalkeeper behind Brodeur at the 2005 Ice Hockey World Championship . After he had booked a shutout in the group game against Slovenia , Luongo came in the second round in the 3: 3 draw against Finland before he was pushed back from his regular position by his competitor Martin Brodeur until the end of the tournament. At the 2006 Winter Olympics , Luongo again represented the Canadian national team. During the tournament he played two games and was on the ice in the preliminary rounds against Germany and Finland.

Brodeur and Luongo were also considered possible regular goalkeepers for the Canadian national team for the Canadian line-up for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . On December 30, 2009, he was appointed to Team Canada and, together with Martin Brodeur and Marc-André Fleury, formed the Canadian goalkeeper trio . Luongo stated that he will accept any role in the team and help the team achieve the best possible result. In the Canadians' first encounter, he managed a shutout in an 8-0 win against Norway . After Brodeur had not convinced in the game against the United States , Luongo was nominated for the next game against Germany in the starting lineup. He did not vacate this position until the end of the tournament and prevailed with the Canadians in the final with 3-2 after extra time against the USA. In 2014 he became Olympic champion with the Canadian national team.

Play style

Luongo plays butterfly style . He falls on his knees and covers the outside area as much as possible with the leg protectors. In the middle he pulls the schooners together to cover the gaps between the legs. Because of this style of play, goalkeepers of this style of play are particularly susceptible to injuries in the groin area . Luongo is known as a goalkeeper with quick reflexes who is a crucial factor for his team in close games. He was one of the leading players in the Vancouver Canucks at the time. Luongo's weaknesses are his occasional lack of concentration and his poor puck handling. During his junior years he learned the basics of the butterfly style from goalkeeping coach François Allaire . This taught him a more aggressive style and helped him to better position play and improved responsiveness.

Luongo is known for his weaker performance at the beginning of the season, while he improves over the course of the season and performs more consistently towards the end of the season. Ryan Kesler praises Luongo as a player with special leadership qualities as well as his hard work and dedication to the team.
