Todd Bertuzzi (born February 2, 1975 in Greater Sudbury , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player of Italian descent who played 1246 games for the New York Islanders , Vancouver Canucks , Florida Panthers , Detroit Red during his playing career between 1991 and 2014 Wings , Anaheim Ducks and Calgary Flames played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position . Bertuzzi, who embodied the power forward player type , took part in the NHL All-Star Game twice and was on the NHL First All-Star Team in 2003 .
However, he gained greater notoriety due to a massive attack during a game in 2004 against his opponent Steve Moore .
Career
Bertuzzi played four years in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with Guelph Storm . During this time he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 1993 by those responsible for the New York Islanders in the first round in a total of 23rd position. In the summer of 1995 he received his first NHL contract with the Islanders. In the following season 1995/96 he played partially for the International Hockey League club Utah Grizzlies , but also in this year he spent most of the time in the NHL. After another season in New York, he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks on February 6, 1998 together with Bryan McCabe and Jarkko Ruutu in exchange for Trevor Linden .

Bertuzzi went on the ice in eight seasons for the Canucks and was one of the top performers within his team. After the offensive player was able to achieve 15 points in 22 games in his first season in Vancouver , he increased his point yield before he scored 103 times in 96 games during the 2002/03 season . This was his most successful season as a professional in the National Hockey League. Bertuzzi was also the fifth best scorer of the main round 2002/03 with 97 points.
Because of a massive foul against Steve Moore in the NHL game of his club, the Vancouver Canucks , against the Colorado Avalanche , in which Moore sustained several broken cervical vertebrae and other injuries, Bertuzzi was suspended from the NHL on March 8, 2004 and was later on trial . Among other things, he was conditionally acquitted under Canadian law with a one-year probationary period and was only allowed on the ice again in the following season. Since he did not attract criminal attention again during his probationary period, he is not considered to have a criminal record. The Vancouver Canucks had to pay a fine of $ 250,000.
For the 2006/07 season , Bertuzzi moved as part of an exchange deal together with Alex Auld and Bryan Allen from the Canucks to the Florida Panthers , who gave Roberto Luongo and Lukáš Krajíček and a draft right to the Canucks. Apart from seven games, Bertuzzi could not play for the Florida Panthers during the season due to a back injury. Shortly before the end of the transfer window, Bertuzzi was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings . With them he moved in the playoffs to the final of the Western Conference . In the summer of 2007, he signed a contract with the Anaheim Ducks , before moving to the Calgary Flames a year later, after the Ducks had paid off his contract early after a disappointing season .
Bertuzzi played in his only season for the Flames as consistently as before in Anaheim and scored 15 goals. On August 18, 2009, he signed with the Detroit Red Wings, for which he had played in 2007. After five years in Detroit, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2014, so he was looking for a new employer as a free agent . On January 9, 2015, he finally signed a tryout contract with the Binghamton Senators with the hope of getting an NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators , which failed because the contract was terminated on January 21, 2015 because Bertuzzi had no points in his first two games and a plus / minus statistic of −3. He then retired as a player from ice hockey.
