Steve Moore (born September 22, 1978 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey striker . During his career he played for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League . His brother Dominic is also a hockey player.
Career
Steve Moore began his career in the lower class Canadian junior league MTJHL with the Thornhill Islanders before he attended Harvard University from the summer of 1997 . He played for the university's ice hockey team and was selected after a good first year by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the second round at position 53. Moore stayed at Harvard for three more years, but his points yield stagnated. Nevertheless, he led the team on the ice as team captain. In 2001 he completed his studies in environmental science and public policy.
In the fall of 2001 he joined the organization of the Colorado Avalanche, but played the first two years mainly for their farm team , the Hershey Bears , in the AHL . In addition, he was also allowed on the ice twelve times in the NHL .
For the 2003/04 season he was then part of the Avalanche NHL squad. He made negative headlines on February 16, 2004 in the game against the Vancouver Canucks when he checked the Canucks team captain, Markus Näslund , with his elbow. Näslund suffered a minor concussion and was sidelined for three games, while Moore got away with it without punishment.
Less than a month later, on March 8, the Canucks took ugly revenge for the attack on their captain. Canucks striker Todd Bertuzzi hit Moore in the head from behind, whereupon Moore hit the ice head first and Bertuzzi landed on him. Moore remained unconscious and had to be transported off the ice on a stretcher. He suffered three broken neck vertebrae, facial injuries and a severe concussion. Bertuzzi was banned for the remainder of the season and conditionally acquitted by a Canadian court and sentenced to a one-year probation period, which is why Bertuzzi was not entered in his criminal record. A few days after the incident, he apologized very emotionally in public for his behavior.
In the months that followed, Moore began rehabilitation and was able to begin light training in late 2004. Moore hoped for a comeback for a few years. but recurrent severe headaches and nausea made a return to professional ice hockey impossible.
In February 2005, he filed a lawsuit in Colorado against Bertuzzi, Brad May , Brian Burke and the Vancouver Canucks team. A verdict was never reached because the judge in charge was of the opinion that the lawsuit in the Canadian province of British Columbia , home of the Canucks, should be better off.
In February 2006, Moore filed a lawsuit against Bertuzzi and Canucks' parent company, Orca Bay , in the Canadian province of Ontario . Moore initially sought Canadian $ 15 million in lost earnings, $ 1 million in compensation for pain and suffering, and $ 2 million in damages.
In July 2014, the claims increased to 68 million Canadian dollars, since no adequate employment is possible outside of professional sports. An out-of-court settlement was finally reached, as announced on August 19, 2014. The parties have agreed not to disclose the content.
