Bowie "Bo" William Horvat (born April 5, 1995 in Rodney , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since August 2013 . The center was selected by the Canucks in ninth position in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and has led the team as team captain since October 2019 .
Career
Horvat played for the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs in his youth. With 125 points he was the best scorer there in the 2010/11 season before he was selected ninth in the OHL Priority Draft by the London Knights . Since 2011 he has been active for the Knights in the Ontario Hockey League , with whom he won the OHL championship in 2012 and 2013 . During the 2012/13 season he took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game . Horvat was the top scorer in the 2013 OHL play-offs with 16 goals and was awarded the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the most valuable player in the play-offs.
In the 2013 NHL Entry Draft , Horvat was selected ninth in the first round by the Vancouver Canucks . After signing an entry-level contract in August 2013 , he switched to the Vancouver Canucks organization at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. After just a few games with the Utica Comets , the Canucks farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), he was called to the Canucks roster and made his debut in the NHL on November 4, 2014. His first goal in the NHL followed on November 20, 2014 when the Vancouver Canucks beat the Anaheim Ducks .
In the 2016/17 season, the center scored 52 points in 81 games and led its team with this statistic; at the same time, for the first time since 2006, a player other than Daniel or Henrik Sedin was the Canucks' best scorer. Horvat then signed a new contract in Vancouver in September 2017, which should earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.5 million over the next six seasons.
In October 2019, Horvat was introduced as the 14th team captain in Canucks history. He succeeded Henrik Sedin, who had ended his career (together with his brother) the previous year.
International
Horvat made his first international appearances at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2012 in Windsor , where he won the bronze medal as captain of Team Canada Ontario. At the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2012 he won the gold medal with the Canadian U-18 selection.
Horvat made his debut for the senior national team at the 2018 World Cup , where he finished fourth with the team.
