Jordan Staal (born September 10, 1988 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League since June 2012 . Previously, the center was active for six years for the Pittsburgh Penguins , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in the 2009 playoffs . He was also world champion with the Canadian national team in 2007 .

Career

Jordan Staal began his career in 2004 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes . There he won the OHL championship and was one of the top scorers of his team. In June he was selected in second position by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft .

Staal was already at the beginning of the 2006/07 season in the Penguins team in the National Hockey League . He scored his first goal in the 6-5 win over New York Rangers , his third NHL game. In the fourth game of the season, he met his older brother Eric of the Carolina Hurricanes for the first time . However, the game was clearly lost with 1: 5.

There were discussions about Jordan Staal, whether he should be sent back to the junior league OHL after the ninth game. Staal performed well, but since his entry-level contract in the NHL only started with the tenth game of the season, there were these considerations on the part of the management of the Penguins. The reason for this was the transfer and contract system in the NHL. Due to the early onset of the entry contract, Staal can be signed by other teams as an unrestricted free agent much sooner without the Pittsburgh Penguins receiving anything in return. The management finally decided to continue using Staal in the NHL.

Staal played a very convincing first season and was used especially in the checking line and in shortfall situations. By the end of the season he had scored the most underpaid goals in the league and took part in the playoffs with the Penguins . Staal contributed three goals, but the season was over after the first round, as the Penguins lost to the Ottawa Senators . Shortly afterwards he took part in the World Cup with the Canadian national team and won the gold medal.

In the 2007/08 season , Staal reached the Stanley Cup final with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but where they failed at Detroit. A year later, the team prevailed in the final against Detroit with 4-3 wins. In the 2009/10 season , as in the previous season , Staal scored 49 points during the regular season. With the Penguins he failed in the Conference semifinals in seven encounters against the Montréal Canadiens . After he had only missed one NHL game in his first four seasons, Staal was put out of action for a long time in the 2010/11 season due to a foot injury, so that he had to suspend play until early January 2011. During the NHL Entry Draft 2012 , the eighth position and the players Brandon Sutter and Brian Dumoulin were handed over to the Carolina Hurricanes, where he played with his brother Eric, who moved to the New York Rangers, until 2016.

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Staal (together with Justin Faulk ) took over the captaincy of the Hurricanes, but handed it over to Justin Williams after one season . After Williams and Faulk left the team after the 2018/19 season, he received the "C" on his chest a second time.
