Jonathan Toews (born April 29, 1988 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . The center has played with the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League since 2007 , who had selected him in third position in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft . With the team he since the 2008-09 season as team captain leads, he won in the years 2010 , 2013 and 2015 the Stanley Cup and was there in 2010 with theConn Smythe Trophy named Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs. He was also honored in 2013 with the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive striker and in 2015 with the Mark Messier Leadership Award for his leadership qualities. With the Canadian national team , Toews won the gold medal at the 2007 World Championships and at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics , making him a member of the Triple Gold Club .
Career
Toews initially played for the Shattuck St. Mary’s ice hockey team in the United States high school league system from 2004 to 2005 . He began his college education in the 2005/06 season at the University of North Dakota and joined the university's ice hockey team , the Fighting Sioux. After a good rookie season, he was selected in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in third position by the Chicago Blackhawks . The following year Toews played again for the University of North Dakota and scored 46 points in 34 games.
Chicago Blackhawks (since 2007)
In May 2007, Jonathan Toews signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. On his debut for the Blackhawks in the National Hockey League , he immediately scored his first goal in the top division of North America with the first shot in the game against the San Jose Sharks . Although the attacker missed a total of 18 games of the season due to a knee injury in January 2008, he finished the 2007/08 season with 54 points, making it the fourth-best rookie in the league. In the summer of 2008, the Blackhawks named him team captain , making him the youngest captain in NHL history after Sidney Crosby and Vincent Lecavalier .
In the subsequent 2008/09 season , the Canadian was able to increase his offensive performance from the previous year and took part in the All-Star Game . In February 2009 he scored the first hat trick of his professional career in the 4-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins . With 69 scorer points Toews was instrumental in the first playoff entry of his team since 2002, but where they lost in the Western Conference finals to the Detroit Red Wings . In December 2009 Toews extended his contract with the Blackhawks for another five years. In the playoffs he led his team to the Stanley Cup victory with 29 scorer points from 22 games and was then awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player . With the title win, Toews became the youngest member of the Triple Gold Club , having previously won gold medals with the Canadian national team at both the World Cup and the Winter Olympics . In the summer of 2010, EA Sports announced that the attacker would appear on the cover of NHL 2011 .
In the following year Toews played with 76 scorer points, the highest point season of his previous NHL career, but was eliminated with the Blackhawks in the first round of the playoffs against the Vancouver Canucks . The 2011/12 season was marked by injuries for the Canadian, so that he only played 59 games and scored 57 points scorer. In the shortened lockout - 2012/13 season he was able to convince with good offensive performances and recorded 23 hits and 25 assists in 47 games this season. The attacker then helped with 14 scorer points in 23 playoff games in the Blackhawks' second Stanley Cup victory within three years and then received the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the most defensive striker in the league. In July 2014, he extended his contract with the Blackhawks for eight years at a rumored annual salary of $ 10.5 million. In the 2014/15 season Toews convinced again with strong performances and marked a total of 21 scorer points from 23 playoff games in his third Stanley Cup success . He then won the Mark Messier Leadership Award for outstanding leadership skills and was featured on the cover of EA Sports' NHL video game.
International
In 2005, Toews was captain of Canada's Team Western at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Lethbridge in the Canadian province of Alberta . There he won the gold medal and was voted the most valuable player of the tournament. A year later, at the age of 17, he played for Canada in the U20 Junior Ice Hockey World Championship . At the Junior Ice Hockey World Championship in 2007 , he led the team's internal scorer rating for the Canadian team and won Canada's third gold medal in the last three tournaments. Toews was also named to the tournament's All-Star Team.
Surprisingly, the Canadian was appointed to the A-squad of Team Canada for the 2007 Ice Hockey World Championship in Moscow on April 25, 2007 and won the world championship with them. He contributed two goals and five assists to the success. In 2010 and 2014 he was Olympic champion with the Canadian national team.
He also represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 and won the gold medal there with the team.
