James Angus Gerald "Gus" Mortson (born January 24, 1925 in New Liskeard , Ontario ; † August 8, 2015 in Timmins , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs between 1942 and 1967, among others , Chicago Black Hawks and Detroit Red Wings played in the National Hockey League . During his career he won the Stanley Cup four times and took part in the NHL All-Star Game eight times .

Career

Mortson's first station as a professional ice hockey player was the Tulsa Oilers from the United States Hockey League in the 1945/46 season . He then moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League , for which he played from 1946 to 1952. In his first season he won the Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs , which he won three more times in 1948, 1949 and 1951. From 1952 to 1958 Mortson wore the jersey of the Chicago Black Hawks , of which he was captain from 1954 to 1957. In 1958, the defender was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings . During the 1958/59 season he joined the New York Rangers franchise and played for the Rangers Buffalo Bisons farm team in the AHL until 1960 . From 1962 to 1967, the left shooter ran with several interruptions as a player-coach with the Chatham Maroons and Oakville Oaks from the amateur league OHA Sr. A before he ended his active career.

Gus Mortson is considered one of the toughest players in NHL history. He led the penalty time statistics of the NHL in the years 1946/47, 1950/51, 1953/54 and 1956/57 and collected 1380 penalty minutes in 798 games. At the Maple Leafs, Mortson played with Jimmy Thomson - this defensive duo, known as The Gold Dust Twins , shaped a body-conscious defensive behavior that often did not stop at unauthorized methods.
