Gus Mortson is considered one of the toughest players in NHL history. He led the penalty time statistics of the NHL in the years 1946/47, 1950/51, 1953/54 and 1956/57 and collected 1380 penalty minutes in 798 games. At the Maple Leafs, Mortson played with Jimmy Thomson - this defensive duo, known as The Gold Dust Twins , shaped a body-conscious defensive behavior that often did not stop at unauthorized methods.
