Joseph Albert Pierre Paul Pilote (born December 11, 1931 in Kenogami , Québec ; † September 9, 2017 in Barrie , Ontario ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played 976 games for the Chicago Black Hawks between 1950 and 1969 and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League on the position of the defender has denied. Pilote was one of the most outstanding players in the NHL during his playing days in the 1960s and one of the best in his position as an attacking defender. In addition to winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1961, he was honored three times with the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defensive player in the league and was voted into one of the two NHL All-Star teams for eight years in a row .
Career
At a very young age, his parents moved to Fort Erie , Ontario . Because the local ice rink had been destroyed by fire, he was unable to play ice hockey for many years and only began his career at the age of 17. As a junior with the St. Catharines Teepees in the Ontario Hockey Association , he quickly caught up.
He began his professional career in the American Hockey League with the Buffalo Bisons , for which he was active between 1952 and 1956. For the 1955/56 season, the Chicago Black Hawks brought him into the National Hockey League . He was considered a strong player and knew how to deal with sticky situations in front of goal. He convinced with his persistence and perseverance. In his first five years, he didn't miss a single game. Elmer Vasko usually played at his side . After the Black Hawks had won the Stanley Cup in the 1960/61 season , he became the captain of the team that also included Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita at the time. In May 1968 it was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Jim Pappin . There he played another season before retiring from his career. He was the best defense attorney in the period between Doug Harvey and Bobby Orr .
In 1975 he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . On November 12, 2008, Pilote was honored in a pre-game ceremony against the Boston Bruins and his former number 3 will no longer be awarded by the Chicago Blackhawks . Pilote died on September 9, 2017 at the age of 85.
