Duncan Keith (born July 16, 1983 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League since 2005 . The Blackhawks won back in the years 2010 , 2013 and 2015 the Stanley Cup and was there in 2015 with the Conn Smythe Trophy as wertvollster player awarded the playoffs. He is considered one of the key figures in Chicago and one of the best defenders of his generation, with the James Norris Memorial Trophy honoring him as the best defender in the league. With the Canadian national team he won the gold medal at the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Winter Games .
Career
Beginnings in the junior and college sector (1999-2003)
Keith learned ice hockey from his father, who also coached him. After his family moved from his native Winnipeg to Fort Frances in the province of Ontario and then to Penticton in British Columbia , he played there for two years from 1999 to 2001 for the Penticton Panthers in the British Columbia Hockey League at the age of 16 . In his last year there, he was named the best defender in the league and was appointed to the league's First All-Star Team. In the summer of 2001, the Canadian joined the college team at Michigan State University . After the first season, the young defender was selected in the second round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in 54th place by the Chicago Blackhawks . However, he did not immediately switch to the organization of the Blackhawks, but remained in the junior division for another year. Until the end of 2002 he played at Michigan State, before he signed a contract with the Kelowna Rockets from the Western Hockey League on December 27, 2002 and thus returned to British Columbia.
Chicago Blackhawks (since 2003)
In summer 2003, Keith finally signed a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, the seasons spent 2003/04 and 2004/05 at first but with the Norfolk Admirals , the former AHL - farm team the Blackhawks. For the 2005/06 season he was able to work out a place in the regular squad of the NHL team in the pre-season training camp and made his debut in October 2005 in the game against the Anaheim Ducks in the top division of North America. In his first full season with the Blackhawks , the left shooter was able to establish himself right away and received an average of 23 minutes of ice time per game, so his contract was extended by four years in the summer of 2006. In the 2007/08 season Keith was given an even bigger role due to the injury situation in the back line of the Blackhawks and he formed together with Brent Seabrook the first defender pairing. His achievements earned him a nomination for the All-Star Game 2008 and he finished the main round with 32 scorer points and an excellent plus / minus statistic of +30. In the 2008/09 season , the Canadian was able to further increase his offensive performance in his new role as assistant captain of the team and scored a total of 44 scorer points in 77 games played.
After Keith had established himself with his performances with the Blackhawks and was able to show his offensive potential more on the ice in the 2009/10 season , his contract was extended by 13 years in December 2009 with a rumored total salary of 72 million US dollars, which the most expensive player contract in the history of the franchise to date . At the end of the season he finished with 14 goals and 55 assists in second place in the category of the strongest offensive defenders in the league and only had to admit defeat to Mike Green of the Washington Capitals . In Game 4 of the Western Conference Final against the San Jose Sharks , Keith lost seven teeth after a puck hit, but continued the game after a few minutes of medical treatment. With a total of 17 points scorer in 22 play-off games, he made a significant contribution to the subsequent Stanley Cup win of his team after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in six games in the final . Keith was then awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defender of the past NHL season.
This was followed by two weaker years in the Blackhawks ' jersey , also due to the poor overall performance of the team, which failed in the first round of the play-offs in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons. In the 2012/13 season shortened by the lockout , Keith marked 27 scorer points in 47 games and was then the second-best scorer of his team in the renewed Stanley Cup victory , which he beat in the final after six games with a further 13 points in the play-offs the Boston Bruins won. The following year Keith was able to convince again with outstanding defensive play and strong offensive statistics and won the Norris Trophy again as the best defender in the NHL. The Canadian was unable to prevent the Blackhawks from losing the final against the Los Angeles Kings despite 11 scorer points in 19 games. Both Keith and the team confirmed their achievements in the 2014/15 season , where they moved into the final of the play-offs and won the third Stanley Cup in five years in the series against the Tampa Bay Lightning , Keith both defensively as well as offensively again played a major role and was subsequently awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the first defender since 2007 as the most valuable player in the play-offs.
At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, Keith played his 1000th regular season game in the NHL.
International
Keith first played for his home country at the 2008 World Cup . There he won the silver medal after a final defeat against Russia. He was also in the squad at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and was the player with the most ice age within his team when he won the gold medal. He was also Olympic champion with the Canadian national team at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi . He was also nominated for the Canadian selection at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , but canceled due to an injury.
