Dominik Kubalík (born August 21, 1995 in Pilsen ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League since May 2019 and plays for them in the position of left winger . His older brother Tomáš Kubalík is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Kubalík learned to play ice hockey in his native Pilsen at the local traditional club HC Plzeň in 1929 , for which he initially played in the youth department until the end of the 2011/12 season. As a 16-year-old, the winger was a regular in the U20 team and collected 20 points in 26 games this season . In the summer of 2012 Kubalík dared to take the next step in his career and, after being selected in the CHL Import Draft, moved to North America in the Canadian junior league Ontario Hockey League for the 2012/13 season . There the Czech played in 112 games for the Sudbury Wolves until January 2014 . He then moved within the league in exchange for his compatriot Radek Faksa for the Kitchener Rangers . The Rangers ended his time in North America in the summer of 2014, during which he was selected in the seventh round in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League .

For the 2014/15 season , Kubalík returned to his home club in Pilsen, where he made the leap to the professional team. In addition to 39 appearances for the club in the extra league , the rookie also appeared 20 times for the U20 team and played six games on loan in the 1st and 2nd league . In the following year Kubalík was the top scorer in the league with 25 goals. He successfully defended the title of top scorer in the 2016/17 season with an improvement to 29 goals. The attacker then signed a contract in May 2017 with the Russian club Salawat Julajew Ufa from the Continental Hockey League , which had secured its transfer rights in the KHL Junior Draft 2016 . However, before he played a game for the KHL club, he was committed in August of the same year by the Swiss club HC Ambrì-Piotta for the following three years. The management of the HCAP immediately loaned the offensive player to his ex-club in Plzeň for cost reasons, where Kubalík played 20 games up to November and again proved his scoring risk with 16 hits to date. He then strengthened Ambrì-Piotta in the National League and was able to avert relegation to the second-rate Swiss League with the team in the playout final . In the 2018/19 season , the Czech advanced to the league's top scorer and led the club to fifth place in the table with 57 points and 25 goals. At the end of the season he received the awards for best striker and most valuable player . His NHL transfer rights from the Los Angeles Kings were acquired by the Chicago Blackhawks at the beginning of 2019 in exchange for a five-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . The Blackhawks finally provided the attacker with an entry-level contract in May 2019 , which initially applies to the 2019/20 season . On October 5, 2019, he made his NHL debut for the Blackhawks as part of the NHL Global Series in Prague .

International

For his home country, Kubalík was on the ice in the junior division at the U18 Junior World Championship 2013 and the U20 Junior World Championship 2015 for the Czech junior national teams. The striker made his first appearances in the 2010/11 season in the U16 national team. As part of the two world championship tournaments Kubalík came to ten missions, in which he scored six times. He scored his only goal for the Czech U20 national team .

The attacker made his debut in the senior national team as part of the Euro Hockey Tour in the 2015/16 season . However, it was not until 2018 that he was nominated for a major international tournament, when he represented his national colors at both the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and the 2018 World Cup in Denmark . Kubalík also played at the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia .
