Alexander "Alex" DeBrincat (born December 18, 1997 in Farmington Hills , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League since November 2016 .

Career

youth

Alex DeBrincat was born in Farmington Hills and played in regional youth teams there until 2013. For the 2013/14 season he moved to the Lake Forest Academy , a private boarding school in Lake Forest in the greater Chicago area , and ran for their ice hockey team at high school level. After only one year, however, the winger joined the Erie Otters from the higher-quality Ontario Hockey League (OHL), which is one of the three major Canadian junior leagues. In his first year DeBrincat made his breakthrough with the Otters, scoring 104 points in 68 games alongside Connor McDavid and Dylan Strome and was awarded by both the OHL ( Emms Family Award ) and the Canadian Hockey League ( CHL Rookie of the Year ) named Rookie of the Year. The American was also appointed to the OHL First All-Rookie Team and the OHL Second All-Star Team .

The attacker confirmed these achievements in his second OHL year, while he represented the U20 national team of the USA over the turn of the year at the U20 World Cup in 2016 and won the bronze medal with the team. After being at the CHL Top Prospects Game had participated and the OHL Third All-Star team was appointed, he chose the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL Entry Draft in 2016 to 39th position. Although the Blackhawks provided him with an entry-level contract in November 2016 , he also spent the entire 2016/17 season in Erie. There he had a significant share in the success of the Otters with 127 scorer points, who won the playoffs for the J. Ross Robertson Cup at the end of the season . DeBrincat himself was awarded the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy and the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the best scorer and the Red Tilson Trophy as the most valuable player . He was also appointed to the OHL First All-Star Team and the All-Star Team of the Memorial Cup , in which the Otters were subject to the Windsor Spitfires in the final . The attacker left the Erie Otters as the second best scorer (332) in franchise history , only Dylan Strome (354) was more successful.

NHL

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season DeBrincat was part of the Chicago Blackhawks for the first time, making his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) in October 2017 . At the end of the season he led the team with 28 goals scored. He then made his debut for the senior national team in his home country, winning the bronze medal at the 2018 World Cup . In the following season 2018/19 he increased his personal statistics again significantly to 76 points from 82 games, whereby he also reached the mark of 40 hits. As a result, he signed a new three-year contract in Chicago in October 2019, which should bring him an average annual salary of 6.4 million US dollars from the start of the 2020/21 season.

Despite his physique (170 cm; 75 kg), which is well below average for NHL standards, DeBrincat is considered a talented offensive player who is particularly convincing through his understanding of the game and technical qualities.
