Connor Murphy (born March 26, 1993 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League since July 2017 . He is the son of former NHL professional and current coach Gord Murphy .
Career
youth
Connor Murphy followed in his childhood the career stages of his father Gord Murphy , who was also a defender. He was born in 1993 in Boston, where Gord was currently active for the Bruins , and learned to skate as a toddler in Miami while his father was playing for the Florida Panthers . Konstanz finally arose when his father worked as an assistant coach at the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2002 to 2010 and the family settled in Dublin , Ohio . There he played in the youth field for the Ohio Blue Jackets before he was accepted into the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (US NTDP) at the beginning of the 2009/10 season , the central talent factory of the USA Hockey Association in Ann Arbor , Michigan . With the local youth teams, Murphy played only a few games in the United States Hockey League , the highest junior league in the United States, and was used for it in several non-competitive games. He also took part in the 2011 U18 Junior World Championships with the U18 national team, which naturally consists mainly of members of the US NTPD , and won the gold medal there with the team.
After two years in the junior program, the defender planned to attend Miami University in Ohio, but was selected in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft in 20th position (and thus in the first round) by the Phoenix Coyotes . He then decided not to go to college and instead to switch to the Ontario Hockey League , one of the top three junior leagues in Canada . There he joined the Sarnia Sting in July 2011 . He also signed an entry-level contract with the Phoenix Coyotes in August 2011 .
Sarnia Sting
His debut with the Sting was delayed until the end of November 2011 due to a knee operation that was necessary after an injury in a training camp of the US NTPD. Nevertheless, the defender had 26 scorer points from 35 games in his first OHL season. The second season, in which he led the team as assistant captain, ended prematurely for Murphy when he sustained a knee injury in the final of the U20 Junior World Championships in 2013 - but the team won the gold medal again.
Arizona Coyotes
At the beginning of the season Murphy joined the Phoenix Coyotes system , initially playing with the Portland Pirates , the Coyotes farm team from the American Hockey League . In November 2013 he was then for the first time in the NHL squad and came in the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning to his debut in the National Hockey League , in which he scored directly. During the 2013/14 season he was used in roughly equal parts in the AHL and NHL. He also took part in the 2014 World Cup, where he finished sixth with the United States' senior national team.
With the beginning of the 2014/15 season, since the Phoenix Coyotes operate as Arizona Coyotes, Murphy established himself in the NHL squad and was used 73 times in the season. After the season he won the bronze medal with the national team at the 2015 World Cup .
Chicago Blackhawks
After almost six years in the organization of the Coyotes, he and Laurent Dauphin were handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks in June 2017 , who in return sent Niklas Hjalmarsson to Arizona.
