Pernell Karl "PK" Subban (born May 13, 1989 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League since June 2019 . Previously, he was active for six years for the Montréal Canadiens and three other seasons for the Nashville Predators . Considered one of the best defenders in the league, he was honored with the 2013 James Norris Memorial Trophy , which honors the best defender in the NHL. With the Canadian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics .
Career
Junior Leagues (2004–2009)
PK Subban first played in a lower class Canadian junior league before the defender was selected in the OHL Priority Selection 2005 by the Belleville Bulls . For this, the Canadian was on the ice in over 250 games in the Ontario Hockey League between 2005 and 2009 , with his greatest team success being reaching the final series of the J. Ross Robertson Cup in the 2007/08 season . Since the Kitchener Rangers, who were victorious in the OHL final, were already qualified as hosts for the Memorial Cup 2008 , Subban also took part in the tournament with the Belleville Bulls.
Montréal Canadiens (2009-2016)
In the summer of 2009 he received his first professional contract in the franchise of the Montréal Canadiens , which had selected him in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in a total of 43rd position, and was initially used with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League . On February 12, 2010 Subban made his debut for the Montréal Canadiens in the National Hockey League . In the 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers , he posted his first assist. The following day he scored another assist, the Canadiens lost again. For the 2011 NHL All-Star Game , he was nominated as one of twelve rookies who took part in the Honda NHL SuperSkills .
On March 20, 2011, he became the first rookie defender in the history of the Montréal Canadiens to score a hat trick when the defender scored three goals in the away game at the Minnesota Wild . After Subban with the Canadiens at the beginning of the lockout - 2012/13 season could not initially agree on a further extension of the contract, both sides came in January 2013, a new two-year contract. In the remaining 42 games of the season, the Canadian marked 38 scorer points and then received the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the best defender of the past season.
The following year Subban played all 82 games in the main round and was a decisive factor in the play-offs with 14 scorer points from 17 games when his team moved into the Eastern Conference finals, where they were defeated by the New York Rangers . During the summer break there were again lengthy negotiations regarding his contract extension, with an agreement for an eight-year contract with a reported total salary of 72 million US dollars in August 2014, making Subban the highest-paid defensive player in the NHL.
Nashville and New Jersey (since 2016)
In June 2016, the Canadiens gave him to the Nashville Predators and received Shea Weber in return . In his first season in Nashville he reached the Stanley Cup final with the Predators, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins . After three years with the Predators, he was transferred to the New Jersey Devils in June 2019 , while Nashville received Steven Santini and Jeremy Davies and a second-round vote for the 2019 and 2020 NHL Entry Drafts .
International
PK Subban has played in two world championships for the Canadian U20 youth team and won gold medals in both 2008 and 2009 . In addition, he was appointed to the all-star team of the 2009 World Cup and was one of the best players in the tournament. In April 2012 he made his debut for the Canadian men's selection in a preparatory game against Switzerland. But due to an injury he missed the following World Cup. In 2014 he became Olympic champion with the Canadian national team.
