Miles William Wood (born September 13, 1995 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American ice hockey player who has played for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League since April 2016 in the position of left winger . His father Randy Wood was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Wood played during his junior years exclusively in the lower class junior area. He was initially active between 2010 and 2012 for the Salem Ice Dogs in the Empire Junior Hockey League , before he was active from 2012 for the high school team at Noble & Greenough School in the US state of Massachusetts . During this time he was selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft 2013 in 100th place by the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League .

After graduating from high school, the striker enrolled at Boston College , where he worked parallel for the college's ice hockey team in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After his freshman year, in which he recorded 35 scorer points in 37 missions , Wood's college career ended early in April 2016 when he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils. He made his NHL debut there in the 2015/16 season . At the beginning of the 2016/17 season , the attacker was also part of the Devils' NHL squad, but was handed over to the Albany Devils farm team from the American Hockey League for a month at the end of October . He did not return to New Jersey until the end of November.

In the 2017/18 season, Wood increased his performance significantly to 32 scorer points from 76 games, so that he signed a new four-year contract with the Devils in September 2018, which should bring him an average annual salary of 2.75 million US dollars.

International

For his home country, Wood played in the junior division at the U20 World Junior Championships 2015 in Canada . The striker was used in five tournament games, but could not contribute a scorer point to fifth place for the Americans. A year later, Wood made his debut as a new NHL player for the US boys' national team at the 2016 World Cup in Russia . He completed all ten tournament games and scored a goal in the preliminary round game against Belarus . After losing in the semi-finals against Canada and in the game for third place against hosts Russia, however, it was not enough to win a medal .
