Nikita Andrejewitsch Gusew ( Russian: Никита Андреевич Гусев ; English transcription: Nikita Andreyevich Gusev ; born July 8, 1992 in Moscow ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . The left winger previously spent seven seasons in the domestic continental hockey league and won the Gagarin Cup there in 2017 with SKA Saint Petersburg . With the Russian national team , he won the gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics under a neutral flag .
Career
Nikita Gussew began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of HK CSKA Moscow . In the 2010/11 season , the defender made his debut for the professional team of HK CSKA Moscow in the Continental Hockey League . In his rookie year , he scored one goal in 18 games. Parallel to the game with CSKA in the KHL, he has been playing for its junior team Krasnaja Armija in the multinational junior league Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga since 2009 and won the Kharlamov Cup , the championship title of the MHL, with the team in the 2010/11 season . He was the best scorer in the playoffs.
In the 2012 NHL Entry Draft , the Tampa Bay Lightning secured his transfer rights for North America in the seventh round in a total of 202nd position. During the 2012/13 season he completed six KHL games for CSKA and was used at the same time at THK Tver in the Wysschaja Hockey League . In mid-November 2012, his contract with the CSKA was terminated and Gusew moved within the KHL to Amur Khabarovsk .
Between 2013 and 2015 he was then under contract with HK Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk and developed into a top performer there, so that he was able to collect 37 scorer points in the 2014/15 season. In October 2015 he moved to SKA Saint Petersburg in return for payment of compensation .
His NHL player rights switched to the Vegas Golden Knights as part of an exchange deal in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft . There he signed an entry contract valid until the end of the season in April 2019 after leading the KHL in scorer points (82) and assists (65) in the 2018/19 season. In the already running playoffs , however, he was not used and could not agree on a new contract with the team from Nevada as a result. As a result, it was handed over to the New Jersey Devils at the end of July 2019 , who in return sent a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2021 and a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 to Las Vegas. At the Devils, Gusew signed a new two-year contract directly, which should bring him an average annual salary of 4.5 million US dollars.
International
At the 2018 Winter Olympics , Gusev won the gold medal with the Russian national team starting under a neutral flag . He was personally recognized as the top scorer of the tournament and subsequently best striker.
