The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 2019 began on April 10, 2019 and ended on June 12, 2019 with the St. Louis Blues 4-3 victory against the Boston Bruins . The Blues played their first final in nearly 50 years, earning their first title in franchise history . They also presented in person by Ryan O'Reilly to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player , who together with Brad Marchand led the Bruins and the Scorer list of these playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Penguins reached the post season for the 13th time in a row , continuing the longest active streak of its kind. On the other hand, the second longest series of the Anaheim Ducks and the Minnesota Wild ended after six consecutive playoff appearances . Moreover, were the first time since the year 2009 , the Carolina Hurricanes represented again in the playoffs, so it the longest losing streak to the Buffalo Sabers ceded, most recently in 2011 had competed for the Stanley Cup.

In the first round all four division winners were eliminated, which was a novelty in the history of the four major North American professional leagues (NHL, NFL , NBA , MLB ). At the same time, all wildcard teams qualified for the second round for the first time in NHL history . Overall, the lower-ranked team prevailed in five of the eight series, which was last done in 2013 . In addition, the Tampa Bay Lightning became the first Presidents' Trophy winner, who was eliminated by the 0: 4 sweep against the Columbus Blue Jackets without a win.

mode

After the three teams with the highest points and the two wildcard teams of the respective conference have qualified from each division, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . In the first round, the division winners meet the wildcard teams of the respective conference, whereby the division winner with the most points meets the worse of the two wildcard teams. The remaining pairings of the Conference quarter-finals will be played within the division among the teams placed second and third.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher ranked team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference is the Prince of Wales Trophy awarded, and the winner of the Western Conference receives the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. In addition, it ends with the first goal ( Sudden Death ) and not, as usual in the regular season, with a shootout .

(A1) Tampa Bay Lightning - (EWC2) Columbus Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets made a sweep of the Tampa Bay Lightning for one of the biggest playoff surprises in NHL history. The Lightning recently won the Presidents' Trophy with 128 points and 62 victories, making them the best team for over 20 years, but they did not manage to carry over the performances of the regular season into the post-season . As a result, for the first time in league history, a Presidents' Trophy winner was eliminated without a single playoff win. Top scorer Nikita Kutscherow recorded two points and was missing in the third game, while goalkeeper Andrei Wassilewski only achieved a catch rate of 85.6%. On the part of the Blue Jackets, who thus won the first playoff series in their franchise history , Matt Duchene , who was committed to the trade deadline , impressed with three goals and four assists and goalkeeper Sergei Bobrowski with 93.2% saved shots.

(A2) Boston Bruins - (A3) Toronto Maple Leafs

In the first round, as representatives of the Atlantic Division, the Boston Bruins and the Toronto Maple Leafs faced each other as in the previous year and ended the series with a 4-3 win for the Bruins with the same result. Nazem Kadri , who was banned for the rest of the series after a cross-check against the head of Jake DeBrusk in Game 2 , provided further parallels . Last year he had to pause three games after a check against the head of Tommy Wingels . Meanwhile, Boston again convinced the first row of attacks around Brad Marchand , Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrňák , who came together to 20 points, while Auston Matthews of the Maple Leafs scored the most goals with five goals. Goalkeepers Frederik Andersen and Tuukka Rask each recorded catch rates of over 92%.

(M1) Washington Capitals - (EWC1) Carolina Hurricanes

The Washington Capitals were defeated in the first round as reigning Stanley Cup winners, the Carolina Hurricanes 3-4 . Both teams met for the first time in the playoffs, while the Capitals did not qualify for the second round for the first time since 2014 . Defender Jaccob Slavin , who gave the most assists of the entire first round with nine assists (together with Erik Karlsson ), and rookie attacker Warren Foegele with four goals and six points scored, convinced the Hurricanes . Washington had the best scorers of the series in their ranks with Alexander Owetschkin and Nicklas Bäckström (9 and 8 points respectively) and with Braden Holtby the statistically better goalkeeper ( catch rate 91.4% compared to 89.9% with Petr Mrázek ), however there was a lack of offensive production of the rear attack rows.

(M2) New York Islanders - (M3) Pittsburgh Penguins

The New York Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 in the first round . For the teams it was the first meeting since the first round of the playoffs in 2013 , in which the Penguins had won 4-2 and had to accept the last sweep in the further course ( conference final ; Boston ). For the Islanders, in turn, it was the first successful sweep since winning the Stanley Cup in the 1983 final against Edmonton . New York managed to continue the trend of the regular season, which they had ended as the team with the fewest goals conceded, so Pittsburgh scored only one goal in three of the four games. Robin Lehner finished the series with an average of 1.47 conceded and a catch rate of 95.6%, while Jordan Eberle impressed offensively with four goals and six points and Mathew Barzal with five assists. On the side of the Penguins, Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel, as key players in recent years, have only had one scorer point each.

(P1) Calgary Flames - (WWC2) Colorado Avalanche

In their first ever playoff encounter, the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Calgary Flames 4-1 and thus reached the second round for the first time since 2008 . After the team had to accept a shutout from Mike Smith in the first game , the first line of attack by the Avalanche around Nathan MacKinnon , Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen became the sporting measure of all things. The three strikers recorded a total of 21 scorer points in the following four games, while goalkeeper Philipp Grubauer , who was preferred to Semyon Varlamow , had a catch rate of 93.9%. On the side of the Flames, especially Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan as top performers in the regular season remained well below their potential.

Conference finals

Eastern Conference

(A2) Boston Bruins - (EWC1) Carolina Hurricanes

In the final of the Eastern Conference , the Boston Bruins prevailed 4-0 against the Carolina Hurricanes . The two teams met for the first time since the second round of the playoffs in 2009 , in which the Hurricanes had also last qualified for a conference final with a 4-3 win and also failed 4-0 at the Pittsburgh Penguins . Against Pittsburgh, the Bruins also contested their previous conference final when they moved into the Stanley Cup final in 2013 - also with a sweep . Goalkeeper Tuukka Rask was decisive for Boston , who showed outstanding performances with a catch rate of 95.6% and an average goal against goal of 1.25. The Hurricanes, however, switched to the goalkeeper position after two games unsuccessfully from Petr Mrázek to Curtis McElhinney . Furthermore, the Bruins provided the significantly better special teams , so the team scored a goal from almost half of the power play situation (7/15), while on the defensive only one of 14 undernumbered situations led to a goal. In addition, Patrice Bergeron impressed with three goals, while no player of the Hurricanes could post more than one goal.

Stanley Cup Final

(A2) Boston Bruins - (C3) St. Louis Blues

In the final series of the 2019 playoffs, the St. Louis Blues prevailed 4-3 against the Boston Bruins . The Blues won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history and also played their first final since 1970 , when they also faced Boston and suffered a 4-0 defeat. The success is rated as all the more remarkable given that St. Louis had changed coaches during the current season - Craig Berube took over for Mike Yeo in November 2018 - and the team finished last among all 31 NHL teams after the 30th game of the season . No team had made a comparable comeback during a season. The Bruins, on the other hand, played their first Stanley Cup final since 2013 , when they lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks . However, their last successful final was only two more years ago, at the end of the 2011 playoffs they celebrated a 4-3 win against the Vancouver Canucks , which also marked the previous final, which went over the full distance of seven games.

The Conn Smythe Trophy received Ryan O'Reilly of the Blues as Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs. He finished the playoffs (together with Brad Marchand ) as the best scorer and scored nine points in the final series and one goal in four consecutive games, which Wayne Gretzky had last achieved in 1985 . In addition, Jordan Binnington became the first rookie goalkeeper to bring in all the 16 wins he needed for his team; he had only been regularly on the ice in the NHL since the beginning of the year. With his counterpart Tuukka Rask he met in the final at eye level ( catch quota 91.2% each). In an overall even series, in which Boston even scored four more hits (22 vs. 18), the away strength and the physical fore-check of the blues were identified as decisive factors. In addition, the Bruins had injury concerns to complain about, so they ended two games with only five defenders. Captain Zdeno Chára also broke his jaw in the fourth game.

Among other things, the decisive 2-0 for St. Louis in the fifth game was controversial, as the goal was immediately preceded by an unpunished tripping of a blues player. Overall, the performance of the referees in these playoffs was viewed much more critically than in previous years.
