Brett Connolly (born May 2, 1992 in Campbell River , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been with the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . With the Washington Capitals , he won the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs . He was previously active in the NHL for the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins .
Career
The Prince George raised Connolly was selected in 2007 in the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League in tenth place by his hometown club, the Prince George Cougars , and initially played for the Cariboo Cougars in the British Columbia Major Midget League . In the 2008/09 season he was a permanent member of the Prince George Cougars squad in the WHL for the first time. There he was awarded the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the league and the CHL Rookie of the Year Award in his first year after scoring 60 points in 65 games. In the following season he completed only 16 games in the WHL due to an injury. In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected sixth by the Tampa Bay Lightning . For the 2010/11 season he was named captain of the Prince George Cougars and was his team's top scorer with 73 points.
After signing a three-year entry - level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 1, 2011 , he made his debut in the Bolts' first season game on October 7, 2011 against the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League, where he stood on the ice for over 14 minutes.
After almost four years at the Tampa Bay Lightning, he was handed over to the Boston Bruins in March 2015 , with Tampa receiving the second-round voting rights in the 2015 and 2016 NHL Entry Drafts . After the 2015/16 season, his contract in Boston was not renewed, so Connolly joined the Washington Capitals as a free agent in July 2016 . In the summer of 2017, he extended his expiring one-year contract for another two years. In the following playoffs in 2018 , Connolly won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals . In the following season 2018/19 the winger recorded his best NHL statistic by far with 46 points, but was unable to agree with Washington on another contract extension. He subsequently joined the Florida Panthers as a free agent in July 2019 , with whom he is expected to receive an annual salary of $ 3.25 million over the next four seasons.
International
During his season as a rookie in the WHL, Connolly took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge for Team Canada Pacific , where he won the silver medal. In the same year he was appointed to the Canadian U18 national team for the first time, with which he took part in the 2009 U18 World Junior Championship as the youngest player in the team . In 2011 he was part of the Canadian squad at the U20 Junior World Championship , which won the silver medal.
