Anton Strålman (born August 1, 1986 in Tibro ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . The defender was previously active in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Columbus Blue Jackets , New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning. With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2017 World Cup .
Career
Anton Strålman began his career as a hockey player in the youth of Skövde IK , for whose first team he was active from 2003 to 2005 in Division 1 and the HockeyAllsvenskan . He was then selected in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round as a total of 216th player from the Toronto Maple Leafs . First, however, the defender played for Timrå IK in the Elitserien for two seasons before he made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Maple Leafs in the 2007/08 season , for which he played until 2009 as well as for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Toronto Marlies . For the 2009/10 season, the defender was initially given to the Calgary Flames , which transferred the Swedes to the Columbus Blue Jackets before the start of the season . There he was a regular for two years before the Blue Jackets did not renew his contract after the 2010/11 season. Finally, the Swede moved to the New York Rangers as a free agent in November 2011 , where he signed a one-year contract that was extended for two more seasons after it expired. With the Rangers he reached the Stanley Cup final in 2014 , but lost to the Los Angeles Kings .
In July 2014, Strålman, again as a free agent, was awarded a five-year contract by the Tampa Bay Lightning , which should bring him an average annual salary of 4.5 million US dollars. In his first year in Tampa, the defender reached his second Stanley Cup final directly , but failed with the Lightning at the Chicago Blackhawks .
After five years in Tampa, the Swede joined the Florida Panthers as a free agent within the state in July 2019 . This provided him with a three-year contract that should bring him an average annual salary of 5.5 million US dollars.
International
For Sweden , Strålman took part in the U20 Junior World Championships in 2005 and 2006 and the World Championships in 2007 , 2008 and 2009 . Furthermore, he represented his home country at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he achieved third place with the team before winning the gold medal with the Tre Kronor at the 2017 World Cup .
