Brandon Tanev (born December 31, 1991 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League since June 2019 . The left winger previously served for three years with the Winnipeg Jets between 2016 and 2019 . His older brother Christopher Tanev is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Tanev played during his junior years between 2010 and 2012 for both the Markham Waxers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Surrey Eagles in the British Columbia Hockey League . Without a draft , the winger moved to Providence College in the summer of 2012 to pursue a degree. At the same time he played for the ice hockey team of the college in Hockey East , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In total, Tanev stayed at college for four years and helped the ice hockey team win the NCAA national championship for the first time in 2015. In the final against Boston University he scored the winning goal.

After completing his studies, the attacker was signed as a free agent by the Winnipeg Jets from the National Hockey League for the remainder of the season and the following in late March 2016 . Towards the end of the season he came to his first three professional missions for the Jets, in which he remained goalless and pointless.

In the 2016/17 season, his first full professional season, Tanev completed 51 NHL appearances, but also played regularly with the Jets farm team , the Manitoba Moose , in the American Hockey League (AHL). It was not until the 2017/18 season that the striker established himself in the NHL lineup of the Jets and subsequently showed his talent as a defensive striker. In July 2019, he finally moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent within the league , where he signed a six-year contract worth $ 21 million.
