Matt Grzelcyk (born January 5, 1994 in Charlestown , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League since April 2016 and plays for them in the position of defender .

Career

Matt Grzelcyk was born in Charlestown, a borough of Boston and attended Belmont Hill High School in Belmont in his youth , for whose ice hockey team he played in a regional high school league. In 2010, the defender moved to the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), the central talent factory of the US American Association USA Hockey . For their junior selections he played in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the country, while the NTDP teams also acted as junior national teams and with them he won a silver medal at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 and the Won gold medal at the U18 World Cup in 2012 . After two years, the defender retired due to age from the program and was then selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 85th position by the Boston Bruins from his hometown.

In the fall of 2012, Grzelcyk enrolled there at Boston University , with whose terriers he henceforth participated in the Hockey East in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's game operations. As a freshman he scored 23 points scorer in 38 games and was consequently elected to the all-rookie team of Hockey East. During the 2013/14 season, in which he missed almost half of the games due to an injury, he represented the US U20 national team at the 2014 U20 World Cup and achieved fifth place with the team there. With the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Grzelcyk took over the position of team captain with the Terriers and promptly led them to the championship of Hockey East. In addition, he also significantly increased his personal statistics and was appointed to the Hockey East First All-Star Team in 2015 and 2016 .

In April 2016, Grzelcyk signed an entry contract with the Boston Bruins, who initially used the defender with their farm team , the Providence Bruins , in the American Hockey League (AHL). In December 2016, however, he was appointed to the Boston squad for the first time and subsequently made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL), with two games for the time being. In the course of the following season 2017/18 he then earned a regular place in the NHL squad of the Bruins and has been there regularly since then.
