The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1987 began on April 8, 1987 and ended on May 31, 1987 with the Edmonton Oilers' 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers . The Oilers won their third title in the last four years and with their captain Wayne Gretzky were the top scorer this post-season . For the Flyers, however, it was the fourth consecutive defeat in the final; most recently they were also defeated by the Edmonton Oilers (1: 4) just two years ago. However, they had with their goalkeeper Ron Hextall to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player in their ranks. This became only the fourth player in NHL history to receive this honor, although his team lost the final; Most recently, Reggie Leach succeeded in doing this in the 1976 playoffs , also wearing the Philadelphia jersey. In addition, the 1987 final was the first since 1971 to cover the full distance of seven games.
In addition, with 26 games played, the Philadelphia Flyers set a record that is still valid today (as of playoffs 2019), which has already been equalized four times (Calgary 2004 , Los Angeles 2014 , Tampa Bay 2015 , St. Louis 2019 ). This was achieved, among other things, because this year, for the first time, the first playoff round was played in the best-of-seven instead of the best-of-five mode as before.

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.
All series in each round are played out in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .
In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
