John Michael "Mike" Lalor (born March 8, 1963 in Buffalo , New York ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 779 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , St. Louis Blues in the course of his active career between 1981 and 1997 , Washington Capitals , Winnipeg Jets , San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Lalor celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Canadiens de Montréal, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1986 .
Career
Lalor initially played two years from 1981 to 1983 with the Brantford Alexanders in the Ontario Hockey League . Despite a successful last season in the OHL with 40 points in 65 games, the defender was not selected in any of the NHL Entry Drafts .
Thus, in September 1983, he signed an undrafted and free agent contract with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League , who initially used him in their farm teams in the American Hockey League . There he won the Calder Cup , the championship of the AHL, with the Canadiens de Sherbrooke at the end of the 1984/85 season . For the 1985/86 NHL , the American made the leap into the Canadiens de Montréal squad and won the Stanley Cup with the team at the end of the season . Lalor then stayed in Montreal for three more years before being transferred to the St. Louis Blues in January 1989 . Within a short time further changes to the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets followed , although he had been able to earn a regular place with all teams. For the 1993/94 season he signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks as a free agent . There Lalor could not establish himself permanently in the regular squad for the first time and was given up to the Dallas Stars after only 23 appearances in March 1994 with Doug Zmolek . In return, the Swede Ulf Dahlén moved to San Jose. After initial injury problems in Dallas, he played there until the end of the 1996/97 season before ending his career after 687 games. His personal best NHL season he had in the 1988/89 season in the jersey of the Canadiens de Montréal and St. Louis Blues, when he was able to score 20 points in a total of 48 games.
