Ulf Reinhold Dahlén (born January 21, 1967 in Östersund ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player , coach and scout , who played 1051 games for the New York Rangers , Minnesota North Stars , Dallas Stars in the course of his active career between 1983 and 2003 , San Jose Sharks , Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League as well as 118 others for IF Björklöven and the HV71 in the Swedish Elitserien on the position of right winger . Dahlén celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Swedish national team , with which he won the gold medal at the 1998 World Cup . After retiring from his career, he worked as a trainer in North America and Sweden between 2003 and 2014. His son Jonathan Dahlén is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Dahlén first played in the Swedish second division before he was drawn in the first round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft in seventh place by the New York Rangers . However, he stayed in Sweden for two more years and played for IF Björklöven in the Elitserien .
In the summer of 1985, the Swede then moved to North America to the Rangers, who brought him into the National Hockey League after two appearances with the farm team . There he played until March 1990 before he was transferred to the Minnesota North Stars for Mike Gartner . Dahlén played four years with the North Stars and had in the 1992/93 season , measured by his point yield, his best year in the NHL with 74 points. After the season he moved with the team from Minnesota to Dallas and played from then on for the Dallas Stars , who gave him in March 1994 in exchange for Doug Zmolek and Mike Lalor to the San Jose Sharks . In the Sharks, the Swede often had to contend with injuries, which caused his performance to fluctuate considerably. This led to the next swap deal the Swede was involved in at the end of January 1997. San Jose gave him, along with two other players, to the Chicago Blackhawks , who in return gave Ed Belfour off . In Chicago, the winger played only six months until the end of the 1996/97 season . Then he returned to his home in Sweden.
Dahlén signed at the beginning of the 1997/98 season a two-year contract with HV 71 Jönköping in the Swedish Elitserien. At the end of the first year of the game, he was awarded the guldpucken for the best player in the league. After the end of his two-year engagement in Sweden, Dahlén returned to the NHL. He played three seasons for the Washington Capitals and showed similarly strong performances as in the early 1990s with the North Stars. For his final NHL season he returned to the Dallas Stars, where he ended his career.
After retiring, he was assistant coach for the Swedish national team for two years . In 2005 he returned to the Dallas Stars organization and was responsible as a scout for observing players in European countries. From the 2006/07 season he worked in Dallas as Dave Tippett 's assistant coach . After two years he left the stars to become head coach at Frölunda HC . In his first season he led this to third place in the regular season before the team failed in the playoff semifinals at HV71 . After the team did not get beyond the first round in the following season, Dahlén was removed from office in April 2010. For the 2011/12 season he was hired by the HV71 as head coach. The engagement ended in the course of the 2013/14 season with his early release.
In 2014 Dahlén was inducted into the Swedish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .
International
Dahlén represented his home country Sweden at numerous international tournaments. He played at the Canada Cup in 1991 , World Cup of Hockey 1996 , the World Championships in 1993 , 1998 , 2002 and ran at the Winter Olympics in Nagano in 1998 and in Salt Lake City in 2002 .
