Fort Erie [ fɔɹtˈɪɹi ] is a city on the Niagara River in Ontario , Canada . The Niagara River is a natural boundary between Canada and Buffalo , New York , USA .
Fort Erie, built by the British in 1764, served as an armaments store for the British forces during the American independence movement . When the war between the United States and Great Britain broke out in 1812 , Fort Erie was in the middle of a new construction phase, so that the British were surprised by the Americans and Fort Erie was lost to them. The Americans occupied Fort Erie for a while and were able to repel two attack attempts by the British. The Americans later destroyed Fort Erie and returned to Buffalo in the winter of 1814. The ruins were restored as a tourist attraction in 1939.
On August 7, 1927, the Peace Bridge between Buffalo and Fort Erie was opened.
