The Regional Municipality of Niagara , also known as the Niagara Region , is a Regional Municipality (regional municipality ) in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario . The main town and seat of the regional council is Thorold . The population is 431,346 (2011), the area 1854.17 km², which corresponds to a population density of 232.6 inhabitants per km².
The regional parish covers most of the Niagara Peninsula . Its eastern border is the Niagara River , which is also the border with the United States . Lake Ontario lies in the north and Lake Erie in the south . The Niagara region forms the southeastern end of the metropolitan area known as the Golden Horseshoe .
Unique landforms make the Niagara region an important center for agriculture and tourism in Canada. The most important branch of agriculture is viticulture in the hills of the Niagara layer (see Viticulture in Canada ). The main tourist attraction are the Niagara Falls . The Welland Canal , which bypasses the falls, forms an important part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway .
