Thorold is a city in the south of the Canadian province of Ontario . It is located in the Regional Municipality of Niagara and is also its administrative seat. The city has a population of 18,224 (as of 2006). The Welland Canal flows through the city and attracts numerous tourists every year due to the lock system close to the city . In addition, the Battle of Beaver Dams occurred in June 1813 near what is now the city .
The city is named after the British nobleman and politician John Thorold, 9th Baronet .
