Niagara-on-the-Lake [ naɪ̯ˈjægɹəɑnðəˌleɪ̯k ] is a Canadian city in Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara River in Lake Ontario . It is opposite the US city of Youngstown ( New York ). The next major city is St. Catharines .
history
The settlement's original name was Butlersburg before it was named Newark in 1781 when loyalists fled north from the United States during the American Revolutionary War .
In 1792, after being renamed Niagara , Newark became the capital of Upper Canada for a short time , but lost this title to York , today's Toronto , as the city seemed endangered by its close proximity to the US border.
During the war of 1812 , the city was captured and destroyed by US troops before they withdrew. The city was rebuilt by the British and still retains much of its historic charm today. Niagara was renamed Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1880 to distinguish it from the city of Niagara Falls .
The city today
Niagara-on-the-Lake is now a delightful tourist attraction. In 2003 the city was declared a National Historic Site . The city regularly hosts the Shaw Festival, named after George Bernard Shaw . Niagara-on-the-Lake is also considered the most famous wine-growing region in Canada. Relatively mild climate and good soils produce high quality wines, ice wine is award-winning . The most commonly grown grape varieties include Riesling , Müller-Thurgau , Zinfandel and Merlot . See also the article Viticulture in Canada .
