Elgin County is a county in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario . The county seat is St. Thomas . The population is 87,461 (2011), the area 1880.90 km², which corresponds to a population density of 46.5 inhabitants per km². The county is named after James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin , Governor General of Canada from 1847 to 1854. It is located on the north shore of Lake Erie .
