The Algoma District is an administrative district in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario . The main town is Sault Ste. Marie . The population is 115,870 (2011), the area 48,810.68 km², which corresponds to a population density of 2.4 inhabitants per km².
The Algoma District forms part of the coast of Lake Superior , the uppermost of the Great Lakes . The district was founded in 1858 and extended west to the Minnesota border . With the establishment of more districts, the area of the district decreased: Thunder Bay District in 1871, Manitoulin District in 1888, Sudbury District in 1894 and Timiskaming District in 1912.
