The Muskoka District Municipality is a Regional Municipality ( regional municipality ) in the center of the Canadian province of Ontario . The main town and seat of the regional council is Bracebridge . The population is 58,047 (2011), the area 3937.76 km², which corresponds to a population density of 14.7 inhabitants per km².
The district was created on January 1, 1971. In the west it borders on Georgian Bay of Lake Huron , in the east on Algonquin Provincial Park and Haliburton County . It is approximately 150 km from Toronto via Highway 400 and Highway 11 .
The area is known for tourism and serves as a weekend destination for many big city dwellers. It is criss-crossed with weekend houses (cottages) and lodges . In the summer months, the number of visitors increases sharply and often exceeds the number of permanent residents many times over. Vacationers appreciate nature and the many lakes. She is also particularly known for her cranberry cultivation. Extensive cranberry fields can be found in the Bala area (Ontario's “cranberry capital”).
