Muskoka Lakes [ məsˌkoʊ̯kəˈleɪ̯ks ] is a small town in the Muskoka District Municipality in Ontario , Canada and has about 6000 inhabitants.
It was founded in 1971 through the amalgamation of several smaller parishes, namely Cardwell, Watt, the composite parish of Medora and Wood, the city of Bala (Ontario's cranberry capital), Port Carling Windermere and parts of the former parish of Monck. The administration is based in Port Carling.
The area is criss-crossed by lakes and forests. The ground, the Canadian Shield, is rather rocky and unsuitable for agriculture. That is why the wood industry was very well represented in the past. Today tourism is the main source of income. In the small town of Bala (Ontario) in particular, there are huge cranberry fields and cultures. There you can get information about the cultivation and harvest during guided tours.
The largest lake in the district is Lake Muskoka .
