The Lake Muskoka is a lake of the Canadian shield . The lake is between Port Carling and Gravenhurst .

The main tributary is the Muskoka River . This also gives the lake water a natural brownish color, in contrast to other lakes with crystal clear water.

There is a connection to Lake Rosseau via the Indian River and locks in Port Carling .

There are many cottages around the lake , some of which are privately owned.

The small town of Bala (Ontario) (part of the Muskoka Lakes community ) is also located on its banks and is known as “Ontario's cranberry capital” - and is also marketed as this in tourism. There is also the outflow over the Moon River and the Musquash River that branches off from it . Both rivers flow into Georgian Bay .
